Let’s celebrate this moment with these glorious allium blooms a little more before they fade.
🌱the allium genus of plants are native to regions all over the world.
🌱are part of the onion family that includes chives, leeks and garlic.
🌱because of their strong scent and flavour, few animals will nibble on them more than once.
🌱by interplanting alliums around plants more likely to be eaten by animals, you may reduce the likelihood that those plants get devoured.
🌱large flowering alliums like these have been cultivated from alliums that originated in Central Asia to have even larger and larger flowers and are given trademarked names like ‘Purple Sensation’.
🌱bulbs like this are planted in the fall for blooms the following spring.

It’s been a while... Here in Anchorage, spring emerged somewhat slowly at first with cool days and cold nights with steady snowmelt. Already that’s a distant memory.
Here is the transition of the early east garden through the spring. Right now the alliums are exploding alongside the bleeding hearts and it is a moment that I look forward to all year.

This sliver of forest between my suburban neighbourhood and a man-made lake in the middle of a city offers a reminder.

The forest speaks: I have not always been like this - once there was vastness around me. Still, I am here with you.

In gratitude, I am honored to live, work and love on this cherished ground.
I am a settler-visitor to this land.

I recognize that this land is Dena'ina ełnena.
Anchorage is Dena'ina homeland.

Still dropping below freezing at night. I’m relishing this spring. It’s so short and I want to enjoy every moment. It is only May 1st!

Up here, north of the 61st parallel we are gaining light. The sun will set at 8:15pm tonight. It rose at 7:56am. ⠀
The snow is still above well above my knees, layered high on the rooftop and breakup is about to begin. In just two months time it will be so different. ⠀
Blink. March 17 2020 to May 17 2020. ⠀
⠀
Change is inevitable. ⠀
Change is coming. ⠀
⠀
May we all be free to live, love and belong to this beautiful changing world. Let us help shape the change that holds us together; to work together take on problems that are solvable, to embrace the abundance of those solutions and shine brightly. ⠀
⠀
I believe in you. I believe in you. I believe in you. ⠀

Winter and Fall.
This body of water is ever present in my life. It is central to University Lake off-leash dog park here in Anchorage and this is very familiar view to anyone who walks a dog here. ⠀
⠀
I was surprised to learn that it was actually a gravel pit back in the 60s when they were building the UMED (University-Medical District) and nearby residential areas. ⠀
⠀
I wrote 2 blog posts - one about soil ; one about water - and this lake manages to be featured in both. ⠀
⠀
They are quick reads if you're interested. ⠀

The pandemic allowed me to fall in love with my houseplants all over again. I had several, but I took them for granted. ⠀
⠀
You know what happened? When I started loving on those old plants again they burst forth with new life. A 15 yr old pothos that had a couple sad vines to it's name now stretches across the entire living room. An injured 12 yr old monstera that had never really recovered is now poised to be a glorious composition. An ageless spindly dragon tree is now crowning new growth. ⠀
⠀
I'm convinced it was attention. Loving attention. It's not like they weren't watered before. ⠀
⠀
I think it works with people too. ⠀
Sometimes we all need a little extra. ⠀
⠀
This photogenic blue star fern in a sheepie pot was gifted to me from a dear friend as she moved out of state. I am still surprised at how well it is doing in this east facing window, all winter long with weekly-ish watering. ⠀

The most beautiful food. ⠀
While I did not grow this, I deeply appreciate that I have access to this visual and nutritious delight. Thank you farmers and grocery stores for bringing in fresh, amazing produce in the dead of winter. ⠀
⠀
It's certainly a balance - there is a multitude of considerations underneath this picture. Transportation. Storage. Fair Pay. Water equity. Soil health. Food waste and security. All of this and more. ⠀
⠀
I feel like anything is possible when I see these curls and spirals of growth. ⠀
⠀
I made coconut cauliflower curry with roasted sweet potatoes served over spinach and brown rice if you were wondering. ⠀

I told myself I wasn't going to dahlia this year... but then this happened. I might still try and get a bouquet subscription from . O the Patience. ⠀

Now to get them started...⠀

Garden journal ideas are on the blog... Link up in bio 👆🌿

Getting set up for some strategic seed starting - it’s too soon for most but it’s the right time to get organized.

I finally remembered to find mouse melon seeds before they sold out.
