The Finish That Changes Everything: Why Hardware Is Never an Afterthought

There are details in a room that take up very little space—and somehow change everything.

Hardware is one of them.

A cabinet pull may only be a few inches long, but its finish, scale and shape can quietly shift the entire personality of a kitchen, bathroom or piece of furniture.

I often think of hardware the way I think of jewelry.

It shouldn’t compete with everything around it. It should finish the story.

On a beautifully painted cabinet, an aged brass pull can introduce warmth and history. Against white oak, something darker can create just enough contrast. And sometimes the prettiest choice isn’t the most decorative one at all—it’s the simple piece with the right weight, proportion and finish.

One thing I’m particularly careful about is mixing metals intentionally rather than matching every finish in the room.

Your faucet, lighting and hardware do not have to be identical.

In fact, a room can feel far more collected when finishes relate to one another without looking as though they came from the same box.

The secret is repetition.

If I introduce aged brass on the cabinetry, I might allow it to appear again in a lamp, a frame or another small detail elsewhere in the room. That repetition gives the eye a reason to believe it belongs there.

And this is why I rarely consider hardware at the very end of a project.

The smallest details may not be the first thing you notice in a beautiful room—but they’re often what make the entire room feel finished.

That’s the difference between simply selecting materials and actually designing how they live together.

It’s finally time to open the door. 🕯️🌿

Welcome to Lantern & Oak.

For a while now, I’ve wanted to create a place that goes a little deeper than beautiful rooms.

A place to talk about the homes that hold our stories. The traditions we carry with us. Old houses with creaky floors and beautiful imperfections. Gardens that change with the seasons. Tables meant to be gathered around. And all of those little details that somehow turn a house into home.

So I created Lantern & Oak — Stories of Home. Timeless Living.

Lantern & Oak is the Journal of Melissa LaRosa Interiors, where I’ll be sharing stories and inspiration centered around historic homes, timeless interiors, gardens, Southern living, family, traditions and the art of creating a home that feels collected rather than simply decorated.

Some weeks we’ll talk design.
Some weeks we’ll wander through old homes and gardens.
And some weeks we may simply talk about the things that make home feel like home.

Because I believe the most beautiful homes aren’t the ones that are perfect.

They’re the ones with stories.

There are some moments in this business that make you stop for a second and really take it all in. This is one of them. 🤍

I am incredibly touched and honored to share that Melissa LaRosa Interiors has been named a 2026 Best of Florida Regional Winner.

But more than the award itself, I keep thinking about the people who helped make moments like this possible.

To every client who has trusted me with their home… every person who has recommended my name to a friend… every person who follows along, shares a post, leaves a kind comment, reads the Journal, or simply continues to cheer this little business on — thank you.

When you own a small business, those things are never small. I notice them. I appreciate them. And I carry them with me.

I started Melissa LaRosa Interiors because I truly believe our homes should be more than beautiful. They should hold our stories, welcome the people we love, and feel like the place in the world where we belong.

To be recognized for doing something that means so much to me is incredibly special.

So this one isn’t just about an award.

It’s about you — the families who invite me into their homes, the community that continues to support me, and every person who has been part of this journey.

THE MONDAY EDIT | Why the Most Beautiful Rooms Never Look Brand New

One of the quickest ways to make a beautiful room feel unfinished?

Let everything be from the same decade.

I love a new sofa. A beautiful new rug. A perfectly tailored pair of drapes. But somewhere in the room, I almost always want something that has lived a little longer than the rest of us.

An old landscape in a worn gilt frame.
A table with a few imperfections.
Books whose spines have faded.
A piece of brass that’s lost its shine.

Not because everything old is automatically beautiful—but because age gives a room something you simply can’t order with two-day shipping: a sense of time.

The trick is in the balance.

Start with the pieces that need to work hard—upholstery, lighting, rugs—and let those provide comfort and function. Then bring in one or two older pieces that interrupt all that newness.

That’s often the moment a room stops looking decorated and starts looking collected.

And maybe that’s why I’m drawn to homes that feel as though they’ve been unfolding for generations.

The best rooms don’t tell you when they were decorated.

They simply tell you someone lives there. 🤍

The Monday Journal 🤎

I’ve been thinking lately about how much the way we design our homes is changing.

Not necessarily because there’s a new color everyone suddenly loves or another trend we’re supposed to follow.

I think we’re simply starting to ask better questions.

Instead of only asking, “Will this room look beautiful?” I find myself asking, “How will you actually live here?”

Where will everyone gather?
Where will you drop your things at the end of the day?
Will this room still feel good on a completely ordinary Tuesday morning?

Because I still love beautiful stone, gorgeous lighting, wonderful fabrics and all of those little details that make a room special. Of course I do. 🤎

But more and more, I think the most beautiful homes are the ones that make everyday life feel better.

The Library That Invites You to Stay

Some of the most memorable rooms in a home aren’t the largest.

They’re the ones that quietly invite you to slow down.

A library isn’t just a place to store books. It’s where mornings begin with coffee, afternoons disappear into a favorite novel, and evenings end with the soft glow of a lamp and the sound of rain outside.

Floor-to-ceiling bookcases.

Collected antiques.

Worn leather.

Natural linen.

Aged brass.

Layers of books gathered over time.

These aren’t just design elements—they create an atmosphere that feels timeless.

The most beautiful libraries don’t look staged.

They look lived in.

They’re personal.

They’re collected.

If I could design one room in every home, it might just be this one.

FROM THE DESIGNER’S NOTEBOOK

“The Detail That Makes a Room Feel Finished”

There’s a difference between putting curtains on a window and dressing a room.

Beautiful drapery does more than provide privacy. It softens architecture, adds movement and texture, draws the eye upward, and can completely change the perceived scale of a space.

One of my favorite ways to elevate a room is to take the drapery higher and wider than the window itself. Mounting the rod closer to the ceiling and allowing the panels to frame the window—rather than cover it—creates the illusion of taller ceilings, larger windows, and a more thoughtfully designed space.

Then comes the fabric.

A relaxed linen brings softness. A subtle stripe introduces quiet pattern. Velvet adds richness. And a beautiful woven neutral can add just enough texture without competing with the rest of the room.

The designer detail?
Drapery should feel like part of the architecture—not an accessory added at the end.

Sometimes the element a room is missing isn’t another piece of furniture.

It’s the finishing layer.
