Fall is really moving in fast. I’m enjoying those last few harvests of summer crops that are still hanging on and looking to (desperately) w**d and amend the soil in my fall beds.

Here’s some views from around the garden and homestead to spark some end of work week joy.

I’m not going to lie, sometimes I find fall and winter gardening to be really tough. In a way it’s not very intuitive (it feels strange to be growing things when the leaves are falling) and it feels like there’s a lot working against you (hello cold temps, lack of rain, and a lot less sunlight).

But I’ve learned a lot from the few seasons I’ve given it a go (and had lots of sad little plants along the way).

One thing I really struggled with was wrapping my head around all the different protective structures. What are they? When do you use a cold frame vs. row cover? What’s worth attempting to grow in a greenhouse and how do you even do it?

If you’d like to give fall and winter gardening a real go we can help answer these questions for you and if you’re not quite ready to commit to help yet, I hope a little information like this is helpful.

Happy gardening!

The leaves have already started dropping here in Pittsburgh which means many of us have already put our veggie gardens to rest and our plants out of our minds.

But believe it or not, if you’re interested in starting a native or pollinator garden now is the best time of year to do it!

Here are some reasons why:

🍁The soil is still warm.
🍁Lower temperatures require less watering and reduce water loss.
🍁Fall planting leads to stronger and better root development.
🍁Fall planting reduces heat stress on new plants.
🍁Planting in the fall reduces competition with w**ds.
🍁Planting in fall allows for natural cold stratification which means less work for you and more success in the garden.
🍁Planting in the fall creates vital sources of pollen for insects in the spring.

Convinced to start planting yet? We know fall can be busy with kids going back to school and holiday season work already beginning for some. That’s why we can help you select, design, and get your native garden planted so that it’s up and running for next spring. Just sent us a message or visit us at pghplantlady.com
