LAIFS members recently enjoyed a fantastic day visiting the gardens of fellow members Jim, and Brian & Gordon.

From impressive staghorn collections and lush fern-filled spaces to creative garden design ideas, our hosts shared their knowledge, experience, and inspiration with the group. It was a wonderful opportunity to see what’s possible when plants and thoughtful design come together.

We wrapped up the day with lunch at the Arboretum, followed by a raffle and auction. Thank you to everyone who joined us for a fun day among friends and plants!

🌿 Volunteers Needed! 🌿

The LAIFS Fern & Exotic Plant Show is almost here, and we’re looking for volunteers to help make this year’s show a success!

Volunteer opportunities are available June 6–15, including setup, hospitality, raffle, sales, security, holding area, and more. Whether you can help for a few hours or several shifts, we’d love to have you on the team.

As a thank-you, volunteers earn LAIFS Bucks ($2 per hour volunteered) to spend on plants, supplies, and raffle tickets at the show. Volunteers also receive early access to plant and merchandise sales during the volunteer preview on Friday, June 12.

Join the Los Angeles International Fern Society for the 2026 Fern & Exotic Plant Show, taking place June 13–14 at the Los Angeles County Arboretum in Arcadia, California.

Discover rare and unusual plants, meet passionate growers and botanical vendors, explore educational displays and workshops, and enjoy a weekend centered around ferns and exotic plants.

Admission to the show is included with paid admission to the Los Angeles County Arboretum, and Arboretum members enter free.

Saturday: 9:00 AM–3:30 PM
Sunday: 9:00 AM–2:00 PM

Our last meeting was a very special one for LAIFS.

Our current president, Jan, presented former president Donna Randoumis with a plaque and flowers in recognition of her six years of dedicated leadership and service to the society.

Donna’s contributions to LAIFS have been immense, including helping establish our high school scholarship program and guiding the society through years of growth and community building. While her term as president has concluded, she remains a deeply valued and active part of LAIFS, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she has done — and continues to do — for the society.

Vendor applications are still open for the LAIFS Fern & Exotic Plant Show, taking place June 13–14 at the Los Angeles County Arboretum.

We’re excited to have an excellent group of vendors joining us this year, including Rainforest Flora Inc., Ambriz Kingdom of Plants, the Los Angeles Carnivorous Plant Society, and many more.

If you’re interested in vending, we encourage you to apply soon while spaces are still available. Early vendor rates have ended, but applications are still being accepted. Please scan the QR code or visit laifs.org/show for more information.

Join us for LAIFS’ May monthly meeting at the Los Angeles County Arboretum as we go over techniques for trimming, cleaning, and preparing ferns for display. Guests are welcome to bring their own plants for hands-on cleaning and grooming during the meeting. Hope to see you there!

LAIFS had the chance to go on an exclusive tour of the Huntington greenhouses, guided by Brandon Tam (). It was an amazing experience walking through the greenhouses together—packed with orchids, ferns, and all kinds of rare plants!

Experiences like this are one of the perks of being part of LAIFS—getting access to special tours, connecting with experts, and sharing it all with fellow plant enthusiasts.

Today was a particularly special day at the grow house. Our friend and fellow member, Fernando, joined us to demonstrate propagation techniques for some of our rarer ferns and to help prepare divisions for the upcoming workshop. There was plenty of cutting and sawing involved, but just as much enjoyment in collaborating and learning together.
