There’s a moment when you walk out the back door, look at your yard, and think, “I know this could be something.” You’re not sure what exactly. You just know the bones are there.

That’s usually where our landscaping team comes in. A client shows us the space, maybe a little overgrown, maybe just a little flat, and we start talking about what they actually want to feel when they’re out there. Sometimes it’s a flowering shrub that holds its own through WNC winters, like a Skip Laurel pushing out those white blooms every spring. Sometimes it’s a drift of Spanish bluebells tucked beneath the trees, soft and wild and effortless. Sometimes it’s a container near the pool that brings the whole outdoor room together.

Every yard has a story waiting to be told. If yours is still in the first chapter, we’d love to help you write the next one. Link in bio to learn more about our landscaping services.

WNC gardeners, your June just got a lot more interesting.

Two free Saturday morning seminars at B.B. Barns are worth putting on your calendar now.

On June 6, join us for "Naturally Beautiful," led by Justin, our Nursery Manager. You'll learn how to choose native plants based on your specific soil and sun exposure, get design tips for building low-maintenance landscapes using native species, and discover how those plants actively support pollinators, birds, and beneficial wildlife. Whether you're starting from scratch or refreshing an existing bed, this is the foundation for gardening smarter in our mountain climate.

Then on June 13, "Planting for Pollinators" picks up right where June 6 leaves off. Our garden experts will cover the top plants that attract and nourish bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, how to group and sequence plantings for continuous bloom, and why pesticide-free care and adding water and shelter elements matters for a true pollinator habitat. Both seminars run 10 to 11 a.m. and are completely free.

Spots are limited and registration is required.

Something big is coming to B.B. Barns on June 4, and it involves bees, butterflies, bingo cards, and a flat of annuals with your name on it.

We are kicking off three weeks of pollinator-focused fun at the garden center, and we have been quietly pulling it all together behind the scenes. Native plant displays going up, bingo cards getting printed, a butterfly wings photo station being built, and a Fill-a-Flat annual sale that is genuinely one of our favorites of the year. June is National Pollinator Month, and we are celebrating it the only way we know how: by making it as easy and fun as possible for Asheville gardeners to plant for the things that keep our whole ecosystem running.

Mark your calendars for June 4 and stay tuned this week for all the details.

Can we talk about the easiest sustainable habit you are probably not doing yet? 🌱

Composting sounds intimidating until you actually start and then you wonder why you waited so long. A small bin on your kitchen counter, a compostable liner, and a little dry material is genuinely all it takes to get going. That is it. No backyard required.

No complicated system. Just a simple habit that keeps food scraps out of the landfill and puts them back into the earth where they actually do something good.

The secret to keeping it fresh and smell-free is balance. Every time you add wet scraps just toss in a little dry material like paper or dried leaves to absorb the moisture. When your bin fills up take it to an outdoor pile or a local compost drop-off and start again.

Small habit. Real impact. Your garden and your community will thank you.

Save this post and share it with someone who has been meaning to start. 🌱

You’ve walked past a bonsai tree, stopped, and thought “I could never do that.” Marie would like a word with you.

This Saturday, May 30 from 10–11am, our in-house bonsai expert Marie is leading a free beginner seminar right here at B.B. Barns. You’ll learn how to select the right tree, pot it, prune it, and shape it into something that actually looks intentional. She’ll also walk you through watering routines and seasonal care so your bonsai doesn’t just survive, it thrives year-round in the WNC climate.

Bonsai has a reputation for being complicated, but it’s one of those things that clicks the moment someone shows you the logic behind it. This seminar is for beginners, plant lovers, and anyone who’s been curious but didn’t know where to start. No experience needed, just show up ready to learn something new.

It’s free, but spots fill up fast. Register through the link in bio.

Things we have heard at our register this week: “I’m just going to grab one thing.” “I don’t know where I’m going to put it but I need it.” “Is it too late to plant tomatoes?”

If you have said any of these out loud this month, you are our people. Late May at B.B. Barns is peak everything. The color is at its best, the vegetable garden is still very much happening, and nobody is leaving with just one thing. We have accepted this. You should too.

Come see what’s calling your name this week.

Some of the most meaningful ways to honor those we've lost are the quiet ones. Planting something beautiful. Tending a garden. Creating a space that blooms year after year.

This Memorial Day, we're grateful for the freedoms that let us do what we love — getting our hands in the soil, growing something from nothing, and making our corner of Western North Carolina a little more beautiful. Our team is holding space today for all those who made it possible.

We're open today if you want to stop by and pick up something to plant in memory of someone special. There's something powerful about choosing a plant that comes back every year.

🌿 Stop in and let us help you find the right one.
