Here’s something most homeowners don’t realize:

Per the International Residential Code (IRC), structural framing has very specific limits. For example:

Solid lumber floor joists can only be notched up to 1/6 of the depth — and never in the middle third of the span

End notches can’t exceed 1/4 of the depth

Holes must not exceed 1/3 of the depth

You should never notch the top or bottom of a joist in the middle third

These aren’t suggestions. They’re structural safety standards.

When unlicensed or inexperienced contractors ignore these rules, the result can be:
• Sagging floors
• Cracked drywall
• Structural failure
• Expensive repairs
• Failed inspections
