I call mine the purgatory basket.

• Every piece of clothing I’m not ready to make a decision about goes in the basket.
• Yes, it does create a basket of stuff that I need to deal with later
• But it’s much better than putting those clothes on my bed or on the floor.
• When the basket becomes full, I take that as my cue to sort through it.

This is my only goal when I start an organizing project with someone.

I’ve been able to create huge transformations in both homes and lives, and it’s so rewarding. At the end of an organizing session, I always ask how my client feels instead of what my client thinks of the project.

It doesn’t matter:
1. What your home looks like to anyone else
2. Whether things are arranged the “correct” way
3. How is works for anyone other than you

The only thing that matters is that it makes you feel better because it works for you.

1. Use bins to contain your categories

2. Label!

Before and after pictures are fun to share, but they leave out the most important part: how it happened.

This transformation happened in just a few hours, including a small storage closet.
(Bookshelf that’s the next project not pictured)

👉 Here’s what we did:

• The biggest problem in this room was the quantity of stuff. Acting as coach and a presence to keep her on track, my client set aside several giant bags of donations.

• We talked about how she uses the things in the office and what needs to be accessible. Using this information, I created storage systems that fit her life and will be easy to maintain.

• This was round 1 of organizing, so I focused on basic structure over the small details. We still have boxes of memorabilia to go through, but for now putting all sentimental things together was good enough.

❗️There’s no point sorting pictures before we can see the floor❗️

If it was easy, we'd all have perfect homes 🤷‍♀

When I'm organizing for myself, decision fatigue is by far the biggest challenge. Even if individually the decisions are easy, looking at the whole picture is overwhelming. Give yourself permission to take it slow!
