JWRA Project Spotlight:

The original Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church (AME) was built in the 1860’s on the corner of Wheat Street (currently Auburn Ave.) and Butler Street (currently Jesse Hill Jr. Drive). It later suffered major damage from a fire in 1923 and as a result was condemned. The building was later restored and has undergone a number of renovations and reconstructed several times throughout the 20th century which aided in supporting its congregation and the surrounding community over the course of that time.

In the early 2000’s under the leadership of Reverend James Davis, JWRA was selected to renovate the sanctuary annex.

The annex included the pastor’s office, administrative spaces, meeting room, church credit union office, and a handicapped lift for the second floor of the exterior of the building. This project also included the renovation of the kitchen to include new commercial equipment and the addition of an elevator.

The Chevene Bowers King (C.B. King) Federal Courthouse was named after the civil right attorney C. B. King. The federal building, designed by J.W. Robinson & Associates (JWRA) in 1992, was completed in 2002 and was said to be the first federal courthouse in the US designed by a black architect and the first federal courthouse to be named after a lawyer who never became a judge.

The 84,000 square foot,three-story building, located in downtown Albany GA, features a mechanical penthouse, rotunda dome at the entrance made of copper, along with public spaces and a waiting room across the front of the building. The walls are also made of Indiana Limestone and Belden Brick. The judges' chambers and the detainees restricted circulation make up three completely separated circulation systems that never have to cross.

JWRA Project Spotlight:

Monroe Theater is located in downtown Athens and it is the first Vaudeville Theater in the US that was built, owned and operated by black people. The building sits on the corner of Washington Street and Hull Street and is the prime location for the “Hot Corner '' or the commercial center for “Black Life” in Athens.

The theater originally was able to seat 550 and officially opened in 1910 and housed performances by Cab Calloway and the Cotton Club’s Butterbeans and Susie Review. Based. It is believed that Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, and Duke Ellington also performed there.

JWRA and Lane Greene provided the architectural restoration design in 1993 to fit modern code requirements while retaining as much of the theater’s original design as possible. Since this was such an unusual project only hand drafting was performed (no CADD). The theater reopened the following year as the community performing arts center.

JWRA Project Spotlight:

The Boyd Elementary School is a 2-story 80,240 sq. ft. building that was originally built in 1970. The newly renovated space accommodates grades PreK-5th and also allows school ‘lockdown’ for each classroom.

Some of the renovations included the modification of the main entrance with steps and a ramp to comply with ADA, and an elevator was added near the courtyard and amphitheater area. Due to the lack of visibility, the main entry and entire front façade of the school which included the relocation of the administration wing and renovation of the media center, was modified with vast amounts of glass for visibility which addressed security concerns.

JWRA Project Spotlight:

The new Mount Zion Primary School, located in Jonesboro GA, accommodates grades, K thru 6th, is a 93,000 sq. ft. It is a single story building that includes 49 classrooms, a large media center with a reading pit, an amphitheater, administration suite, cafetorium and computer lab.

The original jobsite included a natural landform that could easily accommodate tiered seating, outdoor learning and group presentations for performances. From this natural landform JWRA was able to design an outdoor amphitheater with a radial plan design that serves the adjacent elementary school and the community. The school’s layout also reduces the perceived length of the corridors, assists in grade level grouping and creates a secure and safe space between each wing. The music and art classrooms were placed adjacent to the amphitheater; thus, enhancing the communication arts environment.
