JWRA Project Spotlight:
The original Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church (AME) was built in the 1860’s on the corner of Wheat Street (currently Auburn Ave.) and Butler Street (currently Jesse Hill Jr. Drive). It later suffered major damage from a fire in 1923 and as a result was condemned. The building was later restored and has undergone a number of renovations and reconstructed several times throughout the 20th century which aided in supporting its congregation and the surrounding community over the course of that time.
In the early 2000’s under the leadership of Reverend James Davis, JWRA was selected to renovate the sanctuary annex.
The annex included the pastor’s office, administrative spaces, meeting room, church credit union office, and a handicapped lift for the second floor of the exterior of the building. This project also included the renovation of the kitchen to include new commercial equipment and the addition of an elevator.
