We are very pleased to learn that one of the donations to the recent charity auction for the American Conifer Society Southeast Region set a new record for sales price! The plant, which I will detail below, was a 3 gallon Gingko biloba ‘ DD’s Deluxe ‘. The generous and winning bid of almost $400 was placed by the meeting host site, the Baker Arboretum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The proceeds from these auctions go directly into the ACS regional treasury and are used to award grants to Reference Gardens. New signage, educational programs and collection expansion are just a few of the conifer related projects that grants can be used toward. Since 2009, the ACS Southeast Region has awarded over $30,000 to more than 13 gardens here in the Southeast.
This variegated gingko has been sloshing around the trade and some private collections from some years with no registered name that I am aware of. It is reputed to be a weeping form, but I have yet to witness that characteristic. But since this plant is just an “infant” in a gingko lifespan, hopefully with age that trait will indeed develop. Nonetheless, who doesn’t enjoy a variegated gingko leaf?
The plant that I propagated from came tagged “DD variegated weeping”, indicating that it came from the nursery of the late Dennis Dodge. So, taking a cue, I am suggesting the name ‘DD’s Deluxe’, in memory of Mr. Dodge.
