I swear this entire wall exists because I found a $250 cabinet and thought, “wait… I could make that look built in.” And apparently I took that thought very seriously.

The cabinet itself is nothing fancy. Anyone can buy it. But I started building around it, added the shelves, trim, new doors, and slowly it’s turning into the wall I had in my head. It’s still very much in progress, but we’ve come a LONG way from where this started.

And can we talk about the PAINT?! Because I think this is the part that finally made everything click.

The built-ins are BEHR® Paint Overly Olive and the walls are Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin. I wanted the green to feel like it belonged in an older house without going super dark, and Slipper Satin is giving me that warm creamy background without making the whole room feel yellow.

Now that they’re actually next to each other though… I need opinions. Are we loving the olive + Slipper Satin together?? Because I keep walking into this room just to stare at it and decide.

Comment SHOP and I’ll send you the $250 cabinet I used. And yes, I fully support buying one innocent cabinet and accidentally giving yourself an entire wall project.

I’ve been working on this space pretty much every day and somehow it still feels like it’s taking forever.

I keep looking around and seeing what isn’t done yet. The trim. The paint. The floors still covered. All the little things that are still sitting on my list.

Then I went back and looked at the beginning and was like… wait. This was the same room??

The turquoise ceiling, the wood paneling, that whole wall with way too much going on. I kind of forgot how different it used to feel.

And now the built-ins are in, the old doors are back, the floors are done, and it’s actually starting to feel like the room I had in my head.

Still not done. Still driving me a little crazy. But also… okay, we’ve done a lot.

What part made the biggest difference to you?

Okay I need you to weigh in because I keep going back and forth and I genuinely trust your opinion.

The doors are finally in, and I was so sure I’d just paint them to match the built-ins. Easy. Done. Except now that I’m seeing the natural wood next to everything, I kind of love the warmth it adds.

So now I’m stuck between staining them to work with the floors or painting them so the whole built-in wall feels more seamless.

And this is exactly the kind of decision where I will stare at it for three days and somehow become less sure.

So tell me what you’d do if this was your house. Paint or stain? And please give me your reasoning because apparently I need to be convinced.

A lot of you were VERY against me putting doors on this pantry because you thought it was too pretty to cover up and honestly… I got it.

I went back and forth on it for a while because I liked it open too. But every time I looked at this wall, I still felt like something was missing.

I wanted the whole thing to feel useful and pretty, but also like it actually made sense in the house. And once I started picturing doors there, I just couldn’t let the idea go. And let’s be honest the pantry isn’t always going to be nice and styled. He needs to be used every day.

Now that they’re in… yeah. I really think it needed them.

Be honest though, would you have left the pantry open?

Having your little sister move in with you is funny because you think it’s going to be this big life adjustment… and then suddenly you realize you basically just got your built-in best friend back.

She’s nine years younger than me, so we’ve obviously been in completely different stages of life for most of it, but somehow she’s still always been one of my favorite people to do absolutely nothing with.

In one week we somehow adopted a stray kitten, went to the beach in the middle of a weekday, wandered around a book pop-up, admired an unreasonable amount of pretty houses, debated which ones we would absolutely buy if money were no object, and got ice cream more times than I have in YEARS.

And none of it was anything huge. That’s kind of my favorite part.

We usually take a birthday trip together, and this year we’re not doing one, which I thought I’d be a little sad about. But honestly, I’m just really happy she’s here. I’ll take random beach days, ice cream runs and looking at houses together over a trip if it means getting to have more of the everyday stuff.

She’s my little sister, but she’s also always been my built-in best friend, and I didn’t realize how much I missed getting to do normal life together.

I think this is going to be a really sweet season.

PROGRESS!! I need you to understand that this wall looked NOTHING like this a few weeks ago.

There were two little closets here, a whole lot of awkward wall space, and absolutely none of this existed. And now I keep walking past it like… wait, I built that??

The funniest part is I spent so much time trying to make everything perfectly level and straight, only to step back and realize this is a 1935 house and literally nothing around it is perfectly level or straight. So now the built-ins are level… and somehow that makes the house look even more crooked.

Old house problems.

But I’m so happy with how much more intentional this wall feels now. I gained storage, the opening into the pantry feels like it actually belongs here, and it finally feels like this wall has a purpose instead of just being something I was constantly trying to work around.

I still need to finish all the little details and somehow choose a paint color, which apparently has become the hardest part of this entire project because I have approximately 900 off-whites in my hand and suddenly they all look completely different.

Anyway. This is where we are right now and I’m kind of obsessed with watching this room slowly become what I pictured in my head.

Now please tell me… what color would you put on these built-ins?

5 things I don’t do.

I don’t choose between audiobooks and hardcovers. I like both and I refuse to pick. I’ll listen to a book while I’m working, walking, driving… basically whenever I can, but I still love sitting down with an actual hardcover too.

I don’t leave plain walls plain for very long. I always think I can and then I’m like… no, it needs something. Molding, wallpaper, beadboard, trim. I just like a little texture and dimension.

I don’t buy everything new. I actually like a room more when there are older pieces mixed in with newer ones and random things I’ve found over time. It feels less perfect and more like me.

I don’t think small spaces need to be neutral. Honestly, those are usually the spaces where I’m like ok, this is where I can do whatever I want.

And I definitely don’t only take pictures of my house. I will stop in the middle of a walk because I saw flowers, an old truck, a cute house, a color combo… anything. My camera roll is basically just a collection of random things I thought were pretty.

I could probably keep going, which is maybe a problem.

I can officially say the dining room floor is DONE and I have never been happier to be finished with something.

I knew there were a bunch of layers under here. I knew getting them up wasn’t going to be fun. I still somehow underestimated just how awful it was going to be.

And then after ALL of that, the original wood floors weren’t even salvageable. So yes, I uncovered them just to cover them right back up again.

But look at this floor now.

I went with new hardwood, ran it perpendicular to the original floor underneath, sanded it and gave it that warm darker stain I love so much.

seeing it finished makes the whole mess feel a lot less offensive.

Worth it though. Very, very worth it.

And because I know it’ll come up, everything was tested for asbestos before I started removing the old flooring and it all came back clear.

Would you have covered the original floors back up too?
