Fall highlights: giving a talk to the Casis Forrest club on why trees produce fruit, always fun to talk about p**p with grade schoolers. Collecting seed, black, walnut, fermenting, silk tassel seeds, and a surprise find of Indigofera suffruticosa just down the street from my Nursery.

It’s been a whirlwind of a summer with a Nursery expansion, collecting seeds, meeting, new people, cleaning seeds, more cleaning seeds, and a fabulous aquatic plants class by the legendary Casey Williams. Ready or not, here comes fall!

Seed starting headquarters! All seeds are collected, processed and planted by yours truly. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I called this the squirrel cage, it does a pretty good job of keeping the critters out. Once the seedlings are large enough they are moved to Smithville.

Asimina parviflora - Small flower pawpaw extends as far west as Caldwell county in Texas. I’ve been trying to find these trees for a while, they’re fascinating to me because these must be some sort of remnant or isolated pocket for this species. This tree is the only host for the zebra swallowtail butterfly, and there is a corresponding population of these butterflies with these small trees/bushes in Central Texas. I will be saving seeds and trying to germinate these in the fall! As for taste, they’re not bad, but not as delicious as I hoped, my daughter described it as a little bit of a lemon avocado taste with a hint of vanilla.

More mulch, more things to plant! Wild small flower pawpaw near Lockhart- I’ll be watching closely for fruit/seeds. Western white honeysuckle - there needs to be more of these planted all over.
