Key Tips for Heat Pumps During Ice Storms:
Monitor Defrost: A loud, whooshing sound is normal, as it indicates the unit is in defrost mode to melt ice.
Switch to Emergency Heat: If the outdoor unit is encased in ice, or if you hear loud, abnormal noises, switch your thermostat to "Emergency Heat" or "Auxiliary Heat" to protect the compressor.
Clear Airflow: Ensure 2β3 feet of clearance around the unit, but never use a hard shovel or ice pick to remove ice, as this can damage the coils.
Do Not Cover: Do not cover the top of the unit, as this can trap moisture, restrict airflow, and damage components.
Do Not Panic: A small amount of frost is normal
