Hey guys, I have been getting asked how to maintain your lawn for a homeowner doing their own maintenance. A few key points to help you and your lawn work efficiently and look good when you are done.
1. Mowing
• Mow high: Keep grass around 2.5 to 3.5 inches tall. Taller grass shades the soil, preventing w**d growth and moisture loss.
• Sharp blades: Dull blades tear grass, making it more susceptible to disease.
• Don’t cut too much: Follow the “1/3 rule”—never cut more than one-third of the grass blade at once.
These are important factors to help wear and tear on your equipment and yourself.
2. Watering
• Water deeply and infrequently: 1 inch of water per week is ideal (including rain). This encourages deep root growth.
• Morning watering: Water early in the day to reduce evaporation and disease risk.
3. Fertilizing
• Use a balanced fertilizer: Choose one with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (e.g., 10-10-10).
• Timing: Fertilize in spring and fall for cool-season grasses; late spring through summer for warm-season types.
4. W**d Control
• Preventive care: Apply pre-emergent herbicides in early spring to prevent w**ds like crabgrass.
• Manual removal: Pull w**ds early and often to prevent spreading.
5. Aeration
• Annually or as needed: Aerate compacted soil (especially in high-traffic areas) in spring or fall to improve water and nutrient absorption.
6. Seeding
• Overseed in fall or early spring: Helps fill in bare patches and thicken the lawn.
• Choose the right seed: Match grass type to your climate (cool-season vs. warm-season).
7. Pest and Disease Management
• Identify problems early: Watch for brown patches, thinning areas, or visible pests.
• Use appropriate treatments: Spot-treat diseases or pests with targeted products to minimize chemical use.
