The Spring magazine of the Garden Club Federation of Maine is here!

We can't wait to get back in the garden and see what's what. Time to plant those seeds and starts. If it would stop raining.

Spring is a whirlwind of activity. In addition to planning my gardens and planting my annuals, I have been attending many of the district and club annual meetings. It is a privilege to attend these gatherings. I love the opportunity to meet our members and learn what the clubs are doing.

May's full Flower Moon will peak tomorrow on May Day, Friday, May 1! The name of this full Moon should be no surprise; flowers spring forth across North America in abundance this month! 🌸🌕️

The name “Flower Moon” has been attributed to Algonquin peoples, although there are many names for May's Moon. The Cree names Budding Moon and Leaf Budding Moon celebrate the awakening of local flora, which really begins to leaf out now in many areas. Similarly, Planting Moon (Dakota, Lakota) marks the time when seeds should be started for the farming season ahead.

The activities of animals marked spring’s arrival, too, which is highlighted by the Cree names Egg Laying Moon and Frog Moon, as well as the Oglala term Moon of the Shedding Ponies. All three names indicate that warmer weather is on the way! 🌸🌕️

We are really excited to host Chad Hammer, invasive plant biologist with the Maine Dept. of Ag, Conservation and Forestry for this
important educational effort, co-sponsored by the Evergreen Garden Club of Deer Isle. You may not succeed in eradicating the invasive plants in your neighborhood, but you can - and should! - understand why they are a problem and learn best practices to manage them. Birds, bees, moths, butterflies and bats will thank you!

We'll have the wood stove going if needed, but the historic Rural Hall can be chilly in April, so bundle up. All are welcome; hearty refreshments served at 12:30. The department's excellent Invasive Plants Field Guide will be available for sale.

The Hall has plenty of room! We would love to see widespread progress on managing the invasive plants in our beautiful coastal towns. Please pass the word, friends at Bar Harbor Garden Club, Bucksport Garden Club, Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Blue Hill Garden Club and the Ellsworth Garden Club.

The National Garden Club organization is the governing body of our Bar Harbor Garden Club and also our Garden Club Federation of Maine and our St. Croix District. So much great information in our online-only quarterly magazine The National Gardener. Enjoy,

Ms. Tibbitts’ presentation "Clematis: Queen of the Flowering Vine" be an engaging tutorial on all things Clematis.

Clematis are perennials in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Known for their stunning blooms, these climbing vines can provide vertical interest to your garden.

The website, http://HummingbirdFarm.net is full of information on choosing and growing Clematis, including “The Frozen North Pruning System”.

Have you struggled with Clematis in the past? Not sure which Clematis to choose? Intimidated by pruning? This presentation will remove the mystique from growing Clematis. Here is a chance to benefit from Cindy’s years of extensive research and hands-on experience.

Scholarships Available Alert!

The Bar Harbor Garden Club (BHGC) is pleased to announce two scholarship opportunities available to high school and college students and graduates.

Together with the St. Croix Distric of the Garden Club Federation of Maine (GCFM), the Club has awarded these scholarships for several years and is proud to offer them again in 2026.

These scholarships are designed to provide financial assistance to students who are majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, botany, forestry, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental planning or other horticulture related fields.

The awards are also available to students who are not pursuing a college career but have an interest in the horticultural industry, or
related research and project development because a successful idea is not always tied to a formal higher education.
The scholarships are the Inge C.B. Weber Memorial Scholarship and the Peter H. Dolliver Legacy Scholarship. The value of each scholarship is $500-$1,000.

Both scholarships are looking for candidates who are motivated to use plant studies as a pathway for work/employment careers in their future. Applicants must be residents of Maine, and a preference will be given to MDI High School graduates and/or College of the Atlantic students.

The deadline for applications is May 1, 2026. For complete details and application information please visit the BHGC website at: barharborgardenclub.org and select the Scholarship tab.

Questions may be directed to the BHGC Scholarship Chair at [email protected], please use the term “scholarships” in the subject line.

Bar Harbor Garden Club continues to invest in the future. We welcome all applicants to apply. Thank you!
