My Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) is looking lovely today - I hope I get some monarchs! I planted a bunch of seeds from this and my two other plants for the nursery this year, but germination was poor, so I have a limited number of these plants this year. I'll be bringing just a few of the largest to market on Saturday, with more to come later as they grow into their pots. This is one of my favorite plants for my hellstrip - that hot, dry area between the road and the sidewalk where many plants just won't grow.

I will be in Albion this upcoming Saturday (the 12th) with lots of native perennials for sale - stop by, say hi, and keep me from accidentally bidding on a fluffy bunny or a batch of quail to take home!

I spent yesterday up-potting some of the many plants that need more growing space, including some of the Common Snowberries (Symphoricarpos albus) I started from cuttings last summer. One precocious little darling was already starting to bloom! This is a handsome native shrub with great wildlife value, and I just luuuurve it.

How's everyone doing in this heatwave? Feeling a little like this crispy Blue Sage (Salvia azurea) that might have accidentally been left on my blacktop driveway for the last month? Over at All Thumbs the rain barrel is dry, the hose nozzle is broken, and all is turned to sourness and ruin (...that last part might be a movie quote...), but today I discovered the 'Whirling Butterflies' Beeblossom (Oenothera lindheimeri) AND Northern Sundrops (Oenothera tetragona) with their first blooms, and that is just the cheeriest thing! Stay hydrated, stick to the shade, be kind to yourselves, and find joy in the little things - we'll get through this.

It's now been just over 2 weeks since our last frost warning, 5 days since my heat last kicked on during the day, and about 11 seconds since a squirrel uprooted a plant and left it to die on top of its pot just for fun - things are looking up in the nursery! Here's a list of the plants I have ready to go to their forever homes, as well as what will be coming along later as it grows to size. Please send an E-mail if you'd like to place an order, and spread the word if you know someone looking for any of these plants. Thanks!

What a beautiful, sunshine-y day! Spent an enjoyable morning potting up some freshly rooted baby arborvitae until the potting soil ran out (that always happens!), and then worked on hauling plants out of the unheated attic where the itty-bittiest ones had overwintered and out into the weather for the season. Currently looking at fairs and markets to vend at this season in addition to people getting in touch directly - let me know if you have a favorite plant event!

Here's another fun seedhead that's out there somewhere beneath the snow, getting ready to germinate this spring. It's looking a little worse for wear in the picture, but those berries sure are pretty when they're fresh! Does anyone know what fun native plant this comes from?

I heard something about a Superb Owl tonight - must have been the fact that I acquired this charming specimen this past summer in the (probably vain) hope that it will keep squirrels from digging up all of my sweet little plants, and it doesn't yet have a name! Does anyone have a suggestion for a good name for a squirrel-scaring owl?

How does YOUR hair look after coming in from outdoors this time of year?
We're having lots of fun with seeds this time of year. Here are seeds from a NY native (and no, it's not a Truffula tree) that are about to get planted. Does anyone have a guess as to what these little tufties will be when they grow up?

Blue Sage (Salvia azurea) plants in half-gallon pots are now officially available for $10 each!

A North American native perennial and absolute pollinator magnet! Sky-blue blossoms bloom August through October, when blue flowers are rare in the garden.

Blue sage grows up to 5 feet tall (give it a chop down to shin height in early summer if you’d like to keep it a bit shorter) and can benefit from staking or other support in rich soils. It dies down to the ground each winter, so this plant is excellent for those locations where you have to dump snow and don’t want to kill your garden by doing so. Prefers full to partial sun and medium dry to dry soil. Easy to grow, deer-resistant, and stunning!

(Fun social tip: the next time someone really shocks you, try telling them they're "deer-resistant and stunning." Maybe leave out the "easy" part. This is how I generally don't make friends.)
