What's your first thought when you see that bright yellow w**d blooming in the fall? If the first thing that comes to mind is "ragw**d", you aren't alone. Ragw**d and goldenrod bloom around the same time, and many people don't realize they are two different plants. They do look quite different and the blooms of ragw**d aren't as showy as goldenrod....

Not me pulling seed off the at the "redacted location". I worked for the landscaper who put the plants in back in 2006 so I knew this had to be a native grass. The landscaping hasn't really been tended since then so it doesn't look its best, but this Shenandoah looks fantastic.

I had no idea... Salal or lemon leaf (gaultheria shallon) is native to the western coast of the US, evergreen, produces fruit that is a good source of food for wildlife, is hardy in zones 6-8 AND grows in the shade. If you are growing it outside if its native area you do have to be careful about it taking over in moist shady areas. With a bit of management you can keep it under control. I just picked up three plants from , and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised at how well they were packaged. I had never heard of this vendor before ordering so I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. They shipped quickly and as you can see from the picture the plants arrived in excellent condition!

It grows right beside my house and porch and will need to be tamed a bit.
