Storm on the way? Give your gutters and patio cover 20 minutes, all from the ground.

0 to 5 minutes: walk the perimeter and check where every downspout empties.
5 to 10: look up at the gutter line for gaps at the fascia, sag and drip stains.
10 to 15: check the patio cover posts, footings and the attachment to the house.
15 to 20: move anything that can fly and take three photos before the weather arrives.

Then sort what you found into fix now, fix after, or call someone. Most of it can wait until Monday.

Shade is not the same thing as cool.

A non-insulated patio cover stops the sun from landing on you. That is all it does. The aluminum pan overhead still absorbs that heat and radiates it back down onto your patio.

Stand under a bare cover at 3 PM in July and hold your hand up toward the panel. You will feel it coming off the metal.

An insulated panel puts a foam core between two aluminum skins. The heat stops at the roof instead of passing through it, the rain gets quieter, and the panel spans farther so you need fewer posts in the middle of the patio.

Our guide covers the real differences, and the cases where a non-insulated cover is genuinely the right answer instead of the cheap one.

Your patio cover is a roof. Roofs do not absorb rain, they relocate it. A 12x20 cover sheds about 150 gallons for every inch that falls on it, and a single 5 inch Louisiana storm sends roughly 750 gallons off that one structure, all of it along one edge a few feet from your foundation. Walk outside during the next hard rain and look at the outer edge of your patio cover. Wherever the water is hitting, it has been hitting that exact spot every storm since the cover went up. We put together a plain guide to patio cover drainage: when a cover needs its own gutter, when it genuinely does not, and the two-roofs-one-gutter mistake we get called out for more than anything else. https://performancepatioandgutters.com/patio-cover-gutters-drainage/
