Restore 269

Restore 269 Restore (269) is a small-scale building development company started by highschool sweethearts passionate about historic preservation and their hometown

Restore (269), LLC was developed to restore the community of Battle Creek and the (269) area through building restoration and development. Circumstances brought Co-Founders, Battle Creek raised Cody and Caitlynn Newman, back to Battle Creek in summer 2016. They found vacancy in a building downtown Battle Creek where they called home. Like many, returning to Battle Creek was never the plan for Cody

and Caitlynn however, living downtown a new hometown perspective grew and a new appreciation for the city started a new journey. Cody and Caitlynn purchased 115-117 W Michigan Ave summer 2017 in hopes to fix up the space and bring 2 more small businesses to the downtown area. Restore (269) hopes to engage community, spread awareness of the needs and potential of downtown, and preserve Battle Creek's historic buildings. Please follow along our journey as we hope to show our building progress and vision for Battle Creek and the surrounding areas.

The most recently developed and lesser-known downtown apartments in Battle Creek 😅 Life happened, time has gotten away from us, and we have not had a chance to advertise these 8 beautiful new apartments we have put a lot of work into designing, restoring, and building.
Thanks to enthusiastic recommendations through word of mouth, the formerly vacant building is now welcoming its first tenants in almost 30 years.

We do have apartments available for immediate move in! Contact us at [email protected] to inquire, and we will send a packet of information on pricing, floor plans, and amenities!

Lights on! Seeing light within this building after being boarded up for 27 years gave us chills. For the entire time we have lived downtown we have only seen darkness until now.
Tonight, the historic Anson Hotel building was abuzz with activity as we welcomed community members in to share nearing completion of our restoration project. We extend our gratitude to our partners whose tireless efforts, including nights and weekends, have brought us to this milestone. We are so close to the finish line, just a few delays along the way.
We eagerly anticipate the arrival of new residents and Uproot Market & Eatery

A few apartments remain available for rent; inquiries can be directed to [email protected]. Virtual tours of each apartment can be seen here https://linktr.ee/restore269

One of our favorite guests of the night, Tony Rinaldo and his family! He had Tony’s Tailor’s Shop right here in our cafe spot from 1984 until 2011. You can still see the mark on the floor from his giant tailors desk 🫶 Send Tony some love on this post if you remember the shop!

A short read for your Saturday morning ☀️

November 27, 1997: The Anson Hotel closes.
The building has been vacant since.

“The Anson Hotel, a boarding house located in downtown Battle Creek at 121 W. Michigan Ave., closed its doors before Thanksgiving in 1997.

The building was owned by Alex Ratti. According to Alex’s nephew, Joseph, the hotel opened in the 1920s and was the last old-style rooming house in Battle Creek.

It was the old style hotel where you went down the hall to the bathroom. Inside the room was a bed and a dresser and a window. This was not the Holiday Inn. Some people stayed a day and some people stayed a week. Some people rented this as their home,” Joseph Ratti said.”

The new replicated tin ceiling tiles arrived for the Anson Building renovation! Matching the original historic tin ceiling tiles you see in the pre-construction photos was a must for us!
We initially received the WRONG design when it was delivered to the building 🫠 This is a little later than we had hoped, but we have a crew working on install and plan to have it complete before our open house!

What you see here is a dark downtown building that has all too often been overlooked due to its past state of disrepair. For nearly three decades this building has stood vacant, its windows boarded up, and demolition threatened on multiple occasions. Its lack of light meant lack of life. Today the Historic Anson Hotel building’s modernized mechanical systems will be powered up, its spaces will be illuminated, and it will have the upgraded facilities to support our community market, Uproot Market & Eatery, and the homes for eight new downtown residents after the past year of renovations. We are so honored to have been apart of its revival story. We hope you come celebrate with us Thursday, September 26th from 4pm-7pm and check out the restoration.
💙Caitlynn and Cody

Our Story

Restore (269), LLC was developed to restore the community of Battle Creek and the (269) area through building restoration and development. Circumstances brought Co-Founders, Battle Creek raised Cody and Caitlynn Newman, back to Battle Creek in summer 2016. They found vacancy in a building downtown Battle Creek where they called home. Like many, returning to Battle Creek was never the plan for Cody and Caitlynn however, living downtown a new hometown perspective grew and a new appreciation for the city started a new journey. Cody and Caitlynn purchased 115-117 W Michigan Ave summer 2017. The building was fixed up, the commercial storefronts filled, and an upper residential unit is shared with community and out of towners alike as a short term rental on Airbnb.

In the spring of 2018, Cody and Caitlynn were awarded the building at 15 Carlyle in response to a Request for Proposal. The building has been rebranded as the Record Box to pay homage to its historic roots. The building is being restored and will be a mixed use commercial building home to a brewery, co-working space, and multipurpose event space. Restore (269) hopes to engage community, spread awareness of the needs and potential of downtown, and preserve Battle Creek's historic buildings. Please follow along our journey as we hope to show our building progress and vision for Battle Creek and the surrounding areas.
