June Planting, Week 4

The end of June is a good time to refresh, replant, and keep the garden going strong.

Plant okra, Southern peas, long beans, sweet potato slips, pumpkin, and watermelon. Refresh containers with heat-loving annuals, herbs, hibiscus, or vegetables in larger pots.

Keep an eye out for squash vine borers, spider mites, aphids, whiteflies, and chinch bugs. The heat can bring pests fast, so check plants often.

Healthy soil helps your garden handle the heat. Add Goat Goodness to everything you are planting.

By week 3 of June, Central Texas heat is here, so choose plants that can handle it.

This week, stick with okra, Southern peas, long beans, sweet potato slips, watermelon, and pumpkin. You can also plant heat-loving flowers and ornamentals like zinnias, celosia, portulaca, Pride of Barbados, cannas, caladiums, and ginger.

Avoid planting new trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennials unless absolutely necessary. Fall is usually a better time for those.

Water deeply, check containers daily, and keep feeding your soil with Goat Goodness.

Week 2 of June is all about keeping the garden productive while protecting your soil from the summer heat.

Plant Southern peas, okra, sweet potatoes, summer squash, winter squash, and pumpkins. Empty beds can be planted with cowpeas or buckwheat as cover crops to help improve the soil.

Garden tip of the week: pull back mulch, add compost, then replace the mulch to help hold in moisture.

Your garden is working hard this summer. Give it a little Goat Goodness.

June Planting, Week 1

June gardening in Central Texas means it is time to lean into heat-loving plants.

This week is a great time to plant okra, Southern peas, long beans, sweet potato slips, cantaloupe, watermelon, and pumpkins. You can also start fall tomatoes in pots now so they are ready for mid-July transplants.

Do not forget the garden task of the week: add compost around annuals and vegetables, then water deeply.

And of course, add Goat Goodness to everything you are planting.

This is where smart gardeners adjust.

Focus on heat-loving crops like cowpeas and bush beans. Get those sweet potato slips in if you haven’t yet. At this point, it’s less about planting everything and more about planting the right things.

Watch your soil. Water deep. Stay ahead of the heat, not behind it.

Don’t forget to add Goat Goodness to everything you’re planting.

Local pickup this week:
Monday: BCS Trufit Rock Prairie in College Station, 12:00 to 1:00 PM, and Navasota Post Office, 3:00 to 4:00 PM.
Wednesday: Huntsville Kroger at 5:00 PM.

Our garden is growing fast and before you know it we will have to begin harvesting!
So far, this year, we have planted Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Potatoes, Corn, Basil, Oregano/Marjoram, Sage, and Rosemary.
We have repurposed some old fencing we had that will make a very nice trellis for our cucumbers to climb.

Our gardens LOVE this Goat Goodness!

Now we’re settling into steady growth mode.

Okra, southern peas, and sweet corn thrive in this heat, so keep planting. If you haven’t finished transplanting tomatoes, peppers, or melons, this is your window. After this, the Texas sun takes over.

Water deeper, not more often. Strong roots matter now.

Don’t forget to add Goat Goodness to everything you’re planting.
