What part of your lawn would you give up for these?
This is one of our favorite plants, Calandrinia spectabilis is also known as Rock Purslane. This plant forms a small shrub around 2 feet tall & up to 5 feet wide. The foliage is succulent, evergreen, & adds a nice soft gray green to the garden. The real treat are the flowers, tall wispy stalks stand about 2 to 3 feet above the foliage. Each stalk can produce as many as eight flowers at a time and are over an inch wide and are a bright glowing magenta color. The flowers bloom from spring to fall. Calandrinia thrives in heat, withstands drought, & tolerates poor soil. This succulent plant is also a good choice for containers, slopes, coastal gardens, & fire resistant landscapes. Water this plant deeply twice a month spring through fall (April through October) then water only once a month or less during our cool moist winters (November through March). This plant combines well with other drought tolerant plants like cacti & succulents, grasses, & California native plants. Pruning out the spent flower stalks (deadheading) will promote repeat bloom & an attractive compact shape. Calandirina can be planted any time of the year.
