The world is messy.
People can be mean.
Finding self-love, confidence, assurance in oneself is tricky.
Today's youth is especially prone to having trouble with those things. It's our jobs as parents to make them courageous, strong, reassured, confident - all of the above & more.
The other night I was busy working in the greenhouse, Tucker came in. He'd had a rough day, he was a little down in the dumps. We chatted for a minute & I asked him, "what is your favorite thing about yourself?" I told him not to answer right away. Go somewhere and think about that question, then when I'm done we'll chat.
He came back with answers - millions of them actually, if you know him, you get it. A lot of his answers lead to the words capable, smart, kind, strong... powerful. He liked powerful the best. He felt it most represented what he thought of himself, the good and the bad, actually.
We made a bracelet for him that night with the word "powerful" on it. A consistent reminder, on his arm, to remind himself.. In the moments he's down, in the moments he feels weak, in the moments he's not sure of himself.
I tied the adjustable knots for him, he put it on & he slept in it that night. He woke up in the morning so excited to show me that he still had it on. It's a little, simple thing - but it's making a difference. He's reminding himself of his abilities and finding ways to make "powerful" true all throughout his day.
I encourage you to ask your kiddos what their favorite thing about themselves is. It might surprise you. They're going to give you phrases, situations, sentences - help them land on a word that sums it all up. It's... well, powerful... to hear their thoughts.
Find their word.
Pick their fabric.
Order a bracelet for them.
You won't regret it.
I love this stage of motherhood.
With Love & Lots of It,
The Roost.
