We had the pleasure of seeing North America's largest orchid, the showy lady's slipper orchid (Cypripedium reginae) over the weekend! The showy lady's slipper orchid grows in full sun or part shade, and in a variety of moist and wet soils.

These plants can live for up to 50 years! Please note this species is listed as threatened in Ohio, so it's important to enjoy them only in the wild.

*Not a plant post!* While crawling around taking photos of our foxglove beardtongue in bloom, we found the strangest fungus that we have ever seen!

We believe this is Mutinus elegans, also called the devil's dipstick or the elegant stinkhorn. This species grows / feeds on woody and leafy debris. We use undyed wood chips in a lot of our plant areas, and new mushrooms are always a fun find!

Are you looking for a fun native annual to support butterflies? Look no further than Partridge Pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata)! This plant is small but mighty, reaching a height of approx. 2 feet and pushing out tons of yellow blooms all summer long. In addition to supporting butterflies, this species' seed pods provide excellent winter forage for birds and other wildlife. Partridge Pea also self seeds, so it's great for filling in bare patches in your garden!

Did you know that Ohio has a native succulent? Woodland stonecrop (Sedum ternatum) is a trailing groundcover often found on rocky terrain with dappled sunlight. This species tolerates a variety of soils and light conditions, and is a magnet for our native bees! We'll have tons of woodland stonecrop at each of our sales this spring 🐝
