June 17 marks Bunker Hill Day, commemorating the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the early and defining conflicts of the American Revolution in 1775 in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood. 🇺🇸

The battle is often remembered for the determination and sacrifice of colonial forces, despite ultimately retreating after running low on ammunition. It became a powerful symbol of early American resilience and unity during the fight for independence.

In 1946, John F. Kennedy took part in the Bunker Hill Day parade and delivered remarks at a Knights of Columbus post, reflecting on the battle as an example of courage and the spirit that helped shape the nation’s identity.

In 1944, Italy, First Lieutenant Mary Roberts, an Army nurse, heard a soldier crying in a minefield at midnight. Using a tent stake to probe carefully, she located a man with a shattered femur who had been trapped for four hours. Roberts applied a tourniquet, administered morphine, and slowly dragged him backward along the path she had cleared. After ninety minutes, they reached safety. The soldier survived, losing only his leg. Though initially reprimanded for entering a restricted area, Roberts was later cleared. Her extraordinary courage, determination, and selflessness earned her the Silver Star, exemplifying heroism under extreme danger.
