First zucchinis of the season (Costa Romanesca, bee pollinating my Costa Romanesca plant, Green Machine & Grey Zucchini)!! Also, my first black cherry tomatoes, which is my first indeterminate tomato plant to produce this year!! I can't forget my trust determinate tomatoes (Sasha's Altoi, Oregon Spring & New Big Dwarf) which all started producing last week & should give me a big yield in the next 3 weeks!! Then I'll pull out my determinate tomatoes & plant suckered from my favorite indeterminate tomato plants so I'll have tomatoes to last me all year long!!!
All my watermelon plants are thriving so I'll have more watermelon than I can handle!! I planted 8 plants expecting to keep the 4 that are thriving/doing the best & 7 are thriving & 1 was a late bloomer but is quickly catching up!!! I also have Honeydew, Tigger Melon, Minnesota Midget Melons & 1 Green Nutmeg Melon.
I welcome suggestions re how to use/preserve melons!!!

My first homegrown potato, grown in a grow bag on a table by the window! It's a little small so I left the others in the grow bag to grow more and moved the growbag outside. I planted some blue seed potatoes yesterday & I have some red seed potatoes to plant in a week or so. I don't have space in my garden for potatoes so I'm growing them in a grow bag.
I LOVE grow bags; they have allowed me to expand my garden space exponentially!! I have 15 tomato plants in grow bags, about half of which are starting to fruit! I also have Minnesota Midget Melons growing in a bag in my grow room!

I'm loving the rain!! We needed it and I know that everyone is going to have happy, flourishing gardens because of the rain.
My greens are growing so fast that I can hardly keep up. So far today I harvested some kale (red Russian, white Russian, Dwarf Scotch Blue & Premier), giant winter spinach, rapini (broccoli raab), purple sprouting broccoli, ruby red chard, green onions & garlic leaves. I still have at least a few pounds of arugula to harvest.
What to do with so many greens (this also works with wilting greens so don't throw them out)? I will sautee all of my greens, including the onion leaves, with olive oil, minced garlic, minced ginger, salt & pepper. Super easy & delicious. Then I'll put the greens in the fridge to nibble on over the next couple of days (it will all be in my belly in 3 days). I could freeze some if I wasn't going to be able to eat it all. They are delicious in an omelet with feta cheese....so versatile.
So whether you have a huge harvest or some wilting greens that have seen better days, try my go-to solution and sautee them with olive oil, garlic, ginger, salt & pepper in about 5 minutes you will have delicious cooked greens to use however you want. Healthy & no waste!!

Back to my basil experience/question. For those of you that likes the basil on the left, you got a pretty basil plant with lots of tangled roots that were circling the bottom of the pot in search of nutrients. Not horrible yet, but another few weeks & that plant will be hard to save.
For those you that chose the basil on the right, you chose a soil blocks.

A soil block is a cube of compressed soil & nutrients that grows 1 seedling. When transplanted, the entire block is placed in the soil. Transplants establish quicker (so quicker production) & no root mangling nearly eliminates transplant shock. Also, no wasted plastic containers so it's better for the environment.

I use soil blocks for many of my starts because it generally produces a healthier plant, the roots are air pruned so once the roots hit the air, the stop growing & the plant grows more roots creating a stronger root system.

I started some tomatoes in soil blocks today. Soil blocks are a much healthier way to start plants than in seed starting trays, but I'll explain why later this week. I started a few varieties including Berkeley Tie Dye Pink, Mortgage Lifter, Black Sea Man, Crimson Sprinter & Kellogg's Breakfast (one of my faves). I will be starting new varieties every 2-3 days for the next couple of weeks!!
My friend was over talking while I was working today & I noticed him taking some pictures so I asked what he was taking pictures of & he replied "gardening". I get it.

I lured you in with pictures of soil because I knew that you couldn't resist! If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, I would have no money.
All joking aside, SOIL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR GARDEN. It is the foundation of your garden so if you don't have much money to spend, spend a good portion of your budget on soil or soil amendments. Healthy soil produces healthier plants, bigger harvests, less "problems" & happier gardeners.
If you are a first time gardener or gardening for the first time in a new place then get a soil test. Contact your county extension office to find out how. It's super easy & usually costs less than $20.
I know this post isn't exciting or sexy, but I cannot emphasize enough how important good soil is to your garden.
