There isn’t a single “right” way to start a backyard garden, and that’s what makes it so rewarding. 🌱

In my new post, I break down some of the most beginner-friendly methods, including:
✅ Raised beds for control and organization
✅ Containers (like food-safe 5-gallon buckets) for flexibility
✅ In-ground plots for those with more space

Each approach has its pros and cons, but all can help you grow a healthy, productive garden no matter how much room you have.

Starting a garden doesn’t have to cost much. 🌱

I built this compost bin using leftover wood the previous homeowners left behind and some chicken wire a friend gave me. The only thing I bought was a small bottle of linseed oil to treat the wood so it’ll last a few more seasons.

It’s a good reminder that you can build a backyard garden on a budget — just get creative, reuse what you have, and take it one project at a time.

Backyard gardening isn’t always picture-perfect. 🌱

My compost bin has been waiting for an upgrade, and I’m finally expanding it into a three-bin system. I’m also prepping a new in-ground bed area — right now it’s just a tarp and a pile of soil, but it’ll be ready for planting soon.

Gardens always have projects in progress, and that’s part of the fun. These two have been on my list for fall, and I’m working to wrap them up before the cold really sets in. I’ll share updates as I make progress!

Some tools just make gardening so much easier. 🌱 Whether it’s a sturdy rake for bed prep, a cart for hauling soil and mulch, or a simple pocket knife I always keep in my pocket — these are a few of my go-to tools that I use every single season.

You don’t need to buy everything at once, but having a few reliable tools on hand can save you time, energy, and even your back.

Healthy soil really is the secret to a thriving garden 🌱💪

A few snapshots from my backyard this week — fresh compost in a new bed, a little pepper seedling getting started, and raised beds topped with leaf mulch to keep the soil healthy.

It’s a slow and steady process, but every season the soil gets a little better. 🍂🌿

I just published a new post on the blog: “Building Healthy Soil for Your Backyard Garden.” Check it out here 👉 https://www.thegrittygardener.com/building-healthy-soil

A few shots from a recent backyard harvest 🌅🍑🌶️🎃🍉
The season’s winding down, but the garden’s still giving us plenty of surprises. Duncan, our Boston Terrier, decided to help with the pumpkin harvest — apparently checking for ripeness is his new job 🐾😂.

Which harvest is your favorite — peaches, peppers, pumpkins, or watermelon?

🌱 Why do some vegetables thrive in your garden but struggle in someone else’s?

A big part of the answer is your garden zone.

When I first started gardening, I didn’t realize zones even existed. Learning mine didn’t make every plant grow perfectly — but it gave me a helpful guide. It set realistic expectations and made planning easier.

👉 Let’s jump into garden zones together and figure out what they mean for your vegetables and harvest.

✨ Ever wonder what it looks like to start a garden from scratch?

This was my backyard just a few seasons ago — nothing but plain grass and a lot of trial and error. Today it’s become a productive garden that gives me fresh vegetables, peace of mind, and plenty of lessons along the way.

Inside, you’ll find:

How to figure out your garden zone & frost dates
