๐ŸŒณ A Living Legacy in the Heart of Bonita

In 1921, pioneer Cordell Smith carried a small banyan tree from the Imperial River and planted it along Old 41.

More than 100 years later, that little tree has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Bonita Springs.

Located between Childers and Reynolds Streets, the banyan has watched Bonita grow from a small settlement into the community we know today. For generations, it has provided shade for gatherings, celebrations, and countless photos.

Some say it's the second-oldest banyan tree in Southwest Florida, after the one at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Whether that's true or not, one thing is certain: the banyan tree has become part of Bonita's story.

It's hard to imagine downtown Bonita without it.

Have you ever attended an event, taken a photo, or made a memory under the banyan tree?

May I always remain a person who plants seeds with hope, gathers baskets of homegrown food, saves seeds for next season, pauses for sunrises over the garden, listens to birdsong, watches the bees at work, and doesn't mind being a little wild.

John Finer of the Gulf Coast Orchid Alliance spoke at our May 11, 2026 and gave us great information on raising Orchids and even gave all members cuttings to take home and plant on our trees. It was a great presentation. Thank you John Finer.
