Antique of the Week | It’s been awhile but I’m back with a truly unique antique.

Brass Art Nouveau piano candlestick sconces that are from France or Germany in 1900. These would be mounted on pianos to illuminate sheet music for the pianist before electric lamps were common.

History of Interior Design: Georgian

The Georgian style dominated from 1714-1830. It was defined by symmetry, proportion, and classical inspiration from Greece and Rome, transitioning from early heavy baroque to light, ornate Rococo and Neo-classical styles.

The name derives from the first four British monarchs of the house of Hanover, George I, George II, George III, George IV who reigned continuous succession from August 1714-June 1830. The main Georgian cities of the British Isles were Edinburgh, Bath, pre-Independance Dublin, and London. The style was later revived in the late 19th century in the United States as Colonial Revival architecture and in the early 20th century in Great Britain as Neo-Georgian architecture. In the United States, the term Georgian is generally used to describe all buildings fom the period, regardless of style. In Britain it is restricted to buildings that are architectural in intention.

History of Interior Design: Rococo

Rococo emerged in France in the 1730s as a reaction against formal and geometric Louis XIV style. Aristocrats began to move from Versailles to Parisian townhouses, desiring intimate spaces over formal stately halls. In contrast to Baroque, it was lighter and more whimsical.

History of Interior Design: Baroque

In late 16th century Rome, the papacy was struggling with the rise of Protestantism. Because of this, they started the Counter-Reformation, a period in which church policies and influence were strengthened (of course they did).

They hired architects, painters, and interior designers to re-decorate the city of Rome. Decorations were richer and more grandiose than those of the Renaissance, and the movement evolved into the Baroque style.
