She never said it out loud — not exactly. But you could see it in the way she watched you all together at the table, the way she went quiet for a moment and smiled at nothing in particular.
She didn't need the house to be perfect or the holidays to go smoothly. What she needed was to look across the room and see the people she'd poured her whole life into actually choosing each other — calling, showing up, laughing at the same things they laughed at as kids. That was the whole goal. Everything she cooked, everything she sacrificed, every year she held the family together with both hands was really just preparation for the day she wouldn't be there to do it anymore.
She was building something she hoped would outlast her.
