Restore: 1971 Nomad | There was no turning back now — we were all in.

Once the roof came apart, it became clear why water had found its way inside. Built with minimal framing supporting only a thin aluminum skin, it simply wasn’t designed to withstand decades of exposure. And as every vintage camper owner knows, water is a camper’s worst enemy.

So we blew the roof off Jenny and started fresh. New arched roof joists gave us the space for upgraded mechanicals and wiring, thicker insulation, and the structural support needed for a walkable roof. We then installed ZIP System sheathing and tape, and finished it with a TPO waterproof membrane, creating a durable roof assembly designed to keep the elements out for years to come. The new structure also provided the support needed for twelve rooftop solar panels.

Sometimes the best way to preserve the past is to rebuild it for the future.

Restore: 1971 Nomad | Once we discovered the extent of the water damage, there was no turning back. Jenny was stripped down to her bare bones, revealing soft spots in the floor and aging batt insulation.

We replaced the insulation with 1-1/2” rigid foam and reinforced the floor with 3/4” plywood—creating a solid foundation for everything that followed. Sometimes the most important parts of a restoration are the ones you’ll never see.

Before + After: 1971 Nomad | When we began demoing the bath, we quickly discovered the extent of the water damage hidden beneath the surface. That discovery ultimately drove our decision to fully gut Jenny down to the studs, ensuring every issue was addressed rather than covered up.

While it wasn’t part of the original plan, it gave us the opportunity to rebuild her from the ground up—creating a solid foundation for many more adventures to come.
