Aren’t those pretty?! Lots of new roots on a dahlia cutting. This is getting an upgrade to a bigger pot and then out into the field in a couple weeks! Yay, spring!

Meet Gerrie Hoek. She has been around for over 80 years! It’s easy to see why. Her petals shimmer like they have diamond dust on them. I could sit and stare at her all day. She grows tall and gives the longest, straightest stems. She holds well in a vase. The tubers I have were originally in my grandma’s garden which makes them extra special too. She will always have a place in my garden. #

Dahlia seedlings ready to go into the ground. The weather has turned gorgeous with temps in the 70s so these babies are ready to move to the garden. There is something so exciting about the blooms of seedling because each one is new and unique.

This is the beginning. I hope to look back in many years at this picture and remember where it all started. This account is a journal for me to record my journey. If you’d like to follow along then I’ll give you a fair warning: I’m not an expert, I will make mistakes and be a mess, but it will be real. If you’re looking for the pro, prolly better keep looking 😂. But I have a heart for nurturing dahlias that doesn’t give up easily. I grew up in the dahlia fields with my grandma. Living in the PNW my whole life I was able to grow them easily without much thought or concern. We moved to the gulf coast of Texas a couple years ago and I brought my grandma’s dahlia tubers with me. I’ve grown them here and had beautiful blooms, but it does require more attention. If you’ve ever seen dahlias you know they are worthy of ALL the attention🤩 Here are the first rows getting ready for dahlias. We bought this land almost 2 years ago. It has southern clay soil that cements to your boots and shovel giving you the ultimate gardening workout 😂 💪🏼 So, I’ve worked these beginning rows for several months with compost, dry leaves, grass clippings, alpaca fertilizer and expanded shale. The past 2 years I’ve grown my dahlias in 7 gallon grow bags and it has worked beautifully, giving me loads of extra tubers that I’m going to brave growing in these rows. With the grace of God, support of family and good ol’ hard work there will be a field of dahlias in Texas called Crane Lane Blooms.

Dahlia seedlings 🌱 Each one will create a brand new unique dahlia. At the end of the season last year I collected some seeds from the last blooms. I’ve never saved my own dahlia seeds before, so these babies feel really special.

This is my favorite. Seeds are absolute magic. I remember finding a Christmas gift tucked away under my mom’s bed when I was 10 years old. It was a seeds starting tray and some vegetable seeds. It was the BEST gift I could ever imagine. I still feel the same way today and get just as excited watching these little seeds sprout.

The variety of colors, petals, sizes and patterns is so fun with dahlias. And when they are all together in a bouquet they are so lovely. I’m just getting my seeds started for this year’s flowers and I’m excited to see all blooms again.

One of my favorite parts of my day is collecting eggs 🥚 🐓. Looks at these pretty colors! Our chickens are pretty much pets, and will even come running to you if you call their name. They are free roaming with access to acres of plants and bugs. But they often prefer the porch 🙄🥴
