All of the photos from this year's ArchiCamp have been posted along with captions. More photos will be added if they surface. It was a great camp--and Day 2 may have been the best day we have ever had in the 7 years of ArchiCamp! Thanks so much to our volunteer teachers Steve Holloway and Brenda Zody for organizing the archaeology digs at the historic Franklin Landers-Black and Adams Farm. Thanks to our other volunteer teachers, Christa Mathews and Stephanie Donovan, and Sam Burgess of Indiana Landmarks.

Dates for ArchiCamp in 202o have not yet been confirmed.(It's way to early to think about next year!). We assume we'll be operating on the same schedule, however, so the dates would most likely be Wednesday and Thursday, June 24-25.

Have a great summer!

The second day of ArchiCamp took the group back to the historic Franklin Landers-Black and Adams Farm in Brooklyn owned by Steve Holloway. Steve gave a tour of his house and barn to last year's ArchiCampers too. Thisyear, Steve prepared a daylong session on archaeology. In the 32 years that Steve has owned the property, he's discovered lots of artifacts by "digging them up, stepping on them, and hitting them with the lawn mower." He invited the kids to find some of their own!

The first day of ArchiCamp was spent at the Art Sanctuary and at the Morgan County Public Library in Martinsville. Campers learned that a good building has three essential traits: strength, usefulness, and beauty. What makes a building stand up--and stand the test of time? What happens when a building is no longer used for its intended purpose and becomes vacant? How does a building remain viable in the face of age, change in needs, and change in aesthetic taste?

This year, ArchiCamp focused on public buildings, and one type of building in particular--the public library in Martinsville. This is because after years of discussion and planning and saving money, the library is undergoing a large expansion for the second time in its more than 100-year history. Martinsville residents who were involved with building the original library in 1908 would probably not believe what the library has become in 2019. It is far more than a place for books. It is a multi-media and social center serving a large and diverse community!

Information for Parents and Guardians:

We are looking forward to this week’s ArchiCamp in Morgan County on June 26 and 27! An agenda of activities, lessons, and field trips can be found in another post above. Check your email Inbox for the same message and attachments.

On both days, we ask that kids arrive by 8:45 AM at the Art Sanctuary (190 N. Sycamore St., Martinsville, IN 46151). Pickup will be at 3:30 PM at the Art Sanctuary on Wednesday June 26 and 4:15 PM at the Art Sanctuary on Thursday June 27. All pick-ups and drop-offs will occur at the Sycamore Street entrance of the building.

It will be necessary for campers to bring a sack lunch on both camp days. On June 26, we will have use of the refrigerator at the Art Sanctuary to keep lunches cool. However, June 27 will be spent almost entirely at the historic Franklin Landers-Black and Adams Farm in Brooklyn, so we recommend packing a lunch for that date that does not require refrigeration, unless using insulated lunch bags or cold packs.

We ask that kids dress comfortably for an active two days that will involve some time outdoors. While we are hoping for sun, our plans will proceed rain or shine, so we also ask that kids come to camp prepared for the possibility of damp weather. Since Day 2 involves an archaeological dig, we also ask that kids wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, and sun screen. We recommend wearing older clothes, and bug spray is also encouraged.

In addition, we ask that you fill out the photo release form (see post above) and submit it during drop-off on the morning of June 26. We will have a teacher take pictures so we can document our days on the ArchiCamp page and use photos to promote future camps. We also ask that you complete and submit the permission slip {see post above) for field trips, activities, and bus rides. We will also have photo release forms and permission slips on hand during drop-off on June 26 if you would prefer to fill them out at that time.

Thank you for enrolling your children in ArchiCamp. We believe this week’s experience will provide a fun and inspiring immersion in architecture and archaeology. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Sam Burgess of Indiana Landmarks at [email protected] or (317) 822-7908.

If you were one of the richest people in the world and had far more money than you could possibly use, what would you do with it? Andrew Carnegie paid for 3,000 libraries in cities and towns through America--including Martinsville! Learn more at ArchiCamp.

School's out for summer! ArchiCamp starts in 3 weeks! Got campers? Get them registered now for two days of historic fun and adventure. Find the registration form here.

We'll be "digging in" to the connections between architecture and archeology. Held in Martinsville, Wednesday's session will focus on American public architecture (particularly the library) and its historic assciations with the ancient past. On Thursday, campers will return to the historic Franklin Landers house and farm in Brooklyn--we were there last year, remember?--to get their hands dirty. What kinds of things did the past occupants of this pre-Civil War era house leave behind?
