When our clients purchased this two-bedroom co-op apartment in downtown Brooklyn, they saw something many buyers overlook: potential. While the approximately 700-square-foot unit offered excellent natural light and a desirable layout, it hadn't been updated in decades.

Years of wear had left the walls covered in peeling paint, cracks, discoloration, water stains, and faded finishes from constant sun exposure. Before any new color could be introduced, the apartment needed a significant amount of restoration work.

Before and after: A downtown Brooklyn co-op transformed through plaster repair, skim coating, color consultation, and interior painting.

When our client purchased this three-story row house in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood, she wasn't looking to renovate. The home was already in excellent condition. What it lacked was a sense of personal identity.

Like many homes prepared for sale, the interior had been painted primarily white to appeal to the widest range of buyers. Our client's vision was to create a warmer, more welcoming environment that reflected her personality while enhancing the home's historic character and abundant natural light.

COLOR STUDY: BedStuy, Brooklyn

🏡 This beautiful 3-story townhouse in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn boasts tons of natural light, architectural detail, and space. Currently in production, we can't wait to see it transform into a color-drenched dream home!

Homeowner wanted to do a full color drench (walls, ceiling, trim, everything) throughout the parlor and upstairs floors. She opted for a deep, warm neutral (Benjamin Moore First Crush) in the common spaces, a lush Whisp of Mauve (also Ben Moore) in the master bedroom, and bold BM Blue Gaspe in the guest bedroom.

There’s a reason color drenching has become one of the most talked-about interior paint trends in recent years — when done well, it can completely transform the way a space feels.

Especially in New York City apartments, where square footage is limited and architectural details are often inconsistent, color drenching can make a room feel larger, calmer, more intentional, and significantly more elevated.

If you're thinking about color drenching as a design update, learn how to do it right in terms of light, dark, color scheme, and finishes.

Color drenching can transform a small NYC apartment by creating a more cohesive, refined, and visually expansive space. This design-forward painting technique uses one color across walls, ceilings, trim, and doors to soften harsh lines, enhance natural light, and create everything from airy brightne

Light fundamentally changes how a paint color is perceived, often more than the color itself.

☀️ In rooms with high natural light, colors appear brighter, softer, and slightly cooler, as sunlight can wash out undertones and make bold shades feel more muted.

💡 Rooms that rely on artificial light, especially with warm bulbs, the colors tend to read warmer and more saturated, sometimes pulling out yellow or amber undertones that weren’t obvious on a swatch.

🌤️ In low natural light, colors deepen and can feel heavier or more muted, with cooler or gray undertones becoming more pronounced.

🕯️In low artificial light, the effect is even more compressed, with colors often appearing more flat, dull, or shadowed, sometimes even reading darker and less dynamic than intended.

How Does Lighting Affect the Paint Color on Your Walls?

Light has a direct and often dramatic impact on how paint reads once it’s on your walls. The same color can feel airy and refined in one room, and heavy or dull in another, simply based on lighting conditions. Especially if you’re painting in New York City, where layouts, window exposure, and li...

Ever wonder what's in a can of paint? SPAM - as in Solvents (usually water), Pigments (often titanium dioxide), Additives (things that improve performance), and Materials (chemicals that bind the paint). Knowing what's in the can can help you understand HOW your paint will perform in terms of color, coverage, durability, and stain resistance.

Moral of the story - "premium" isn't always necessary (but it sure covers well!), and "cheaper" isn't necessarily better.

Choosing interior latex paint is tricky. Here’s how to know what you’re getting.
