I wrote this a year and a half ago and sums up my philosophy about w**ds and interested in how other feels about these fabulous, healing plants. It is a bit long. Thank you for reading it. Sam
WEEDS ARE OUR FRIEND!
What it a w**d? By Sam D. Sitterle
A w**d is a plant whose virtue has yet to be discovered.
Now this statement may seem odd, yet it is spot on. Ralph Waldo Emmerson quoined the phrase decades ago. He understood, as do I, that Mother Nature makes no mistakes. She is perfect in everything she does.
As modern, post WWII, landscaping and farming practices have moved towards chemical usage, our soils became depleted of vital trace minerals, metals, beneficial bacteria, fungi and others.
Know this: It takes up to 26 nutrients to create a strong, happy , healthy, insect and pest resistant plant.
When applying typical store-bought fertilizers which have only the top three nutrients, Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium, the plant will sequester the other 23 it needs from the soil itself. Over time these 23 nutrients get used up.
Simply put, this is the definition of depleted soils.
When encountering such a situation, Mother Nature immediately kicks into action by growing plants (w**ds) in those areas. You see, w**ds are the canary in the coal mine and our great ally. They show the thinking person what minerals are deficient simply by their presence. For instance, we know that purple nutsedge sequesters much needed nitrogen to its location. Virginia Button W**d is bringing much needed Cobalt to the areas it occupies. Johnson Grass brings back Calcium from deep within the soil column. W**ds do not wish to be there, and once their job has been fulfilled, they cease to have a reason to exist and just go away in time.
When encountering a βw**dβ, leave it and know that what it is doing is beneficial to the area by balancing minerals. The w**d itself does not want to be there. If you must pull the w**d because it is unsightly, then leave the pulled w**d where you found it. Contained within the body of the w**d is the very nutrients the soil needs for balance. Bagging the w**d removes the very nutrients the soil needs prompting perfect Mother Nature to grow another plant to replace what you just removed.
Sure, you can grow a plant with only three nutrients, yet the down side to this is insect and disease pressures in and on the plant itself (poor quality).
An even more insidious result of poor quality food is the attack on our immune system, a topic I will leave to others perhaps.
