The latest improvement to the DCS MiG-17F module is a complete overhaul of the engine sound set using audio captured from a real MiG-17F.

A huge thank you to Mike Terfehr for generously making his MiG-17F available for the project, and to Echo One Niner (Echo-19 Audio Production) for professionally capturing the VK-1F engine using multiple professional-grade microphones positioned throughout the aircraft, both inside and out.

The sound recordings capture the VK-1F engine across a wide range of operating conditions, power settings and RPM ranges, creating an extensive library of authentic source material for the new sound set.

These recordings will be used to replace and refine the current engine sounds, delivering a more immersive and realistic audio experience.

Here's a complete NDB approach in the MiG-17F using our newly developed ARK-5 Automatic Direction Finder under full instrument meteorological conditions.

What makes this more challenging than simply "following a needle" is the workload. The MiG-17 is a compact fighter that constantly demands your attention, requiring continuous control inputs while you scan a cockpit where the primary flight instruments are split across both sides of the panel. Your eyes are always moving reconciling the two areas and info they provide.

On top of that, you're relying on 1950s Soviet radio navigation technology that's only accurate to roughly a kilometer. The ARK-5 gives you the information you need, but not with modern precision. A successful approach comes from interpreting imperfect information, staying ahead of the aircraft, and flying disciplined procedures rather than expecting the equipment to do the work for you.

The mission was flown in 1,000 m visibility, dense fog, an overcast layer up to 3,000 m, and southeasterly winds to recreate the kind of conditions where these systems were designed to prove their worth.

We've now implemented the MiG-17F's radio and radio navigation systems, including a fully simulated P-800 radio and ARK-5 Automatic Radio Compass.

To showcase the system, Sir Brave Robin has put together a video demonstrating how it works and what you can expect in the cockpit.

MiG-17F Development Update

The past three months have been some of our most productive yet, and development has accelerated significantly.

We've implemented most of the aircraft's core systems, including the hydraulic and pneumatic systems (both normal and emergency operation), a major engine overhaul with realistic compressor surges, flameouts, engine damage, and restart logic, as well as radio navigation, kneeboard, most of the cockpit instrumentation, internal and external lighting, landing gear suspension, visual effects, and the first stages of the damage model.

Our flight dynamics have also received another round of refinements, adding more realism. We've improved pilot strength effects at high airspeeds, pilot fatigue, and numerous smaller handling characteristics that continue to bring the aircraft closer to the real thing.

One of the highlights has been validating our flight model against a real MiG-17. We'd like to thank our friend Mike Terfehr () of FighterJets Inc., who used time during his flights to record data and videos for us. This allowed us to compare our simulated aircraft directly with a real MiG-17 at altitudes up to 27,000 feet. The results have been incredibly encouraging and our performance numbers matched the real aircraft not just closely, but two were virtually the same. We're hoping to share side-by-side comparison videos soon.

Our current focus is on cleaning up and optimizing the code while continuing work on the damage model and the gun radar. Progress has been steady, and we can now see the finish line. Our goal is to have the module ready for submission to Eagle Dynamics for official testing in the very near future.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has patiently followed this project over the years. Your support has kept us motivated through a long journey, and we're excited to finally be reaching the stage where we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The MiG-17F is coming together, and we can't wait to share more with you soon. Thank you for sticking with us. We're getting close.

Wags ❤️❤️❤️

For more than two decades, Matt "Wags" Wagner has helped shape DCS into the sim and the community so many of us call home. Now it's our turn to help him.

Operation Wags is a community-wide charity event supporting Wags in his fight against bone marrow cancer, running across two weekends: Friday, July 31st – Sunday, August 2nd, and Friday, August 7th – Sunday, August 9th. Content creators, Eagle Dynamics, third-party developers, mission builders, and community leaders from across the DCS ecosystem are coming together for one purpose, to raise as much as possible for Wags and his family.

REDFOR will be stacked with familiar faces from across the creator and developer community. BLUEFOR is you, whether you're a veteran virtual pilot or brand new to the fight; there's a place in the skies for you at this event. Fly missions, hold or take objectives, chase down your favorite creators for bragging rights, or just be part of something built to support someone who's given so much to this community. Every sortie, every stream watched, every share, and every conversation helps close the gap to the goal.
How you can help:

Donations can be made here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-matt-wags-wagners-cancer-fight

Can't donate? You can still make a difference by sharing the event, joining the servers that weekend, watching streams from participating creators, and helping spread the word on social media. Every bit counts. Thanks to the generosity of Eagle Dynamics, third-party developers, hardware manufacturers, and community partners, there will be giveaways and prizes for participants and viewers throughout both weekends.

What's always made DCS special isn't the aircraft or the technology; it's the people. Operation Wags is creators setting aside competition, developers standing alongside community members, and thousands of virtual pilots rallying behind someone who spent decades building the hobby we all love.

We'll see you in the skies!

The High Alpha Hooligans ran into the MiG-17F at FSExpo while streaming live... and definitely lived up to their name! 😉😎

Truth is, we've been bumping into each other all weekend, and these guys are somehow even more fun off camera than they are on it.

At this point, I kind of want to be a Hooligan myself... but for now, I'm glad to be a HooliFan! 🤘✈️

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
