Citrus season is in full swing in the Bay! 🍊Our clients have been enjoying the fruits of year round care, with delicious, sweet produce. Oranges are a great addition to any landscape because of their low maintenance with pruning, fertilization, and they begin to produce fruit within 3-4 years of establishment. Citrus is also extremely cold hardy and can tolerate the temperature when it drops below freezing 🥶.
🍊Maybe it’s time to add oranges to your home orchard today 🍊

🌿 This week’s plant of the week is an incredibly adorable NATIVE plant species, California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum).🌿

This plant grows on scrubby sagebrush slopes and in chaparral areas. It’s extremely hardy, easy to grow and tolerates incredibly dry conditions. It produces varying pink/white/cream flowers, and as the soil dries they turn a rusty red!

California buckwheat is an imperative keystone species for bees, moths and butterflies. It’s fallen petals provide cover for their larvae in the fall, and provides food for adults.

Try out this plant in your landscape, it’s the perfect time to plant!

Fall fun before Thanksgiving! Other than all the good Thanksgiving food, we've got our minds on leaves, apples and wildflowers!!!

🍁 We have been crushing leaf clean-up, but we love the natural look too! Leaving leaves allows crucial hiding places for beneficial insects around your garden.

🍎 At this client's house, we're seeing the FRUIT of our labor! With our monthly maintenance, we were able to closely monitor this young tree for a great harvest this season.

🌼 Now is the perfect time for wildflower seeding and bulb planting for the spring! We're seeing the first sprouts of California poppies coming in.

🍂This week we wanted to highlight
this GORGEOUS tree painting our California
Landscape this Fall, the American Sweetgum
(Liquidambar styraciflua).

This tree has beautiful star-shaped leaves that turn
many colors with the season change. Although
originally native to the Eastern United States, only 15
other species in this genus are all native to Asia.

These trees (like the one pictured) grow incredibly fast
and can get up to 75 feet tall! If considering this for
your landscape be wary of a few things:
- In the fall, these trees also drop their seed capsules,
which are affectionately known as "gumballs", but they
are spiked and can be a pain in fall clean-ups.
- Because of the massive size of this tree, it expands
its roots far and wide and can be damaging to
infrastructures like hardscapes or house foundations.
So planting it on the far edge of your property would be
a safe bet.🍂

🌳 Check out this incredible pruning video from our Organic Maintenance director, Rachel! 🌳 Pruning to us at Confidence is an art form - getting it right takes time to make sure the cuts we make are perfect. We want to make sure to retain the tree's natural form, without butchering it!

Hello Friends!
We are excited to welcome this week's rain! Be sure to save some water and suspend your irrigation systems :) With the rain, it is the perfect time to throw down some native California wildflower seeds to get beautiful flowers this coming spring and summer. Wildflowers are key for the survival of many California bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, flies and birds. Promote biodiversity on your landscape this year and get to know your local California wildflowers! As always, call us if you need suggestions or assistance :)

Practicing what we preach! Yesterday we administered 450 gallons or organic, nontoxic, soil feeding, fertilizer drench to restore depleted soils at a landscape in Portola Valley. The plants really needed a boost so we are equipping the soil with the tools necessary to do so - activated mycorrhizae! And all sorts of other important soil minerals/nutrients.

We can’t wait to watch for the results!! Already seeing new fronds on ferns that we drenched two weeks ago. We also can’t wait to start our soil testing to monitor numerical results of organic practices.

We have been learning all month about the key role that soil microbes play in plant health thanks to the Ecological Landscaping Alliance. Soil Microbes increase root surface area, make plants more salt and drought resistant, collect nutrients and minerals for plants and convert them into plant available forms, boost plant immune system function and provide communication and energy-sharing networks between plants! Not to mention that soil microbes increase carbon sequestration in the soil and when there is more carbon in the soil, there’s less in our air!
The science about the importance of soil microbes is exploding! We are excited to be incorporating soil microbial biomass testing into our work to ensure that the landscapes we install and the plants we plant have the support of a strong microbial network!
