๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Apparently our balcony garden has a new manager.

We have been keeping an eye on our container plants during the recent heat, but the weather isn't the only challenge in the garden right now.

A little black squirrel has decided our balcony container garden is one of his favorite places to visit... and he has been keeping us busy! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ˜‚

That's gardening though. Sometimes you are dealing with heat, planning for the cooler weather around the corner... and sometimes a squirrel has completely different plans for your garden.

Anyone else have a squirrel, rabbit, chipmunk, or other garden visitor causing trouble? These squirrel come around every year for us and nothing seems to deter them.

There's more hiding in this little garden than you might notice at first glance... ๐Ÿ‘€

It's only about 14 inches across, but we've managed to fit a whole little world inside.

Can you find the little bees? ๐Ÿ

โค๏ธ Found it!

๐Ÿ‘ Still looking!

๐Ÿ˜ฎ I want to make one of these!

Sometimes gardening is beautiful flowers... and sometimes it's little green worms eating your rose bush.

We have been spending some time catching up around the garden lately - cleaning up the plant room, tending to the outdoor plants, and dealing with a few unexpected visitors on our miniature rose bush.

One had aphids, then we noticed little green larvae munching away at the leaves on another, most likely rose slugs (sawfly larvae). ๐Ÿ›๐ŸŒน

Our approach was pretty simple: insecticidal soap along with a good blast of water to knock them from the leaves. Now we're keeping an eye on the plants, the leaves had some damage but they are back to doing what they do best - growing and blooming! ๐ŸŒน

Just another reminder that gardening isn't always about having perfect plants. Sometimes it is noticing a problem, figuring out what is happening, trying a solution... and seeing what happens next.

Anyone else fighting little garden invaders this summer?

โค๏ธ My plants are doing great!

๐Ÿ‘ I've battled a few bugs too!

๐Ÿ˜ฎ I didn't know about rose slugs!

๐Ÿ˜ข The bugs are winning! ๐Ÿ˜‚

This little flower proves you don't need a big garden to make a big impression!

Meet 'Little Suzy'! ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ’›

This compact variety has all the bright golden-yellow blooms and dark centers that make Black-eyed Susans so popular, but it stays a little smaller, making it a wonderful choice for:

- Containers
- Balcony gardens
- Small flower beds
- Pollinator-friendly spaces

One of our favorite things about 'Little Suzy' is how much color it brings to the garden during the heat of summer. When many flowers begin to slow down, these sunny blooms continue putting on a cheerful display.

Plant Tips

๐Ÿ’ง Water regularly while getting established, then only during extended dry periods.

โ˜€๏ธ Loves full sun for the best blooms.

๐ŸŒฑ Remove spent flowers to encourage even more blooms throughout the season.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Bonus: Bees and butterflies love visiting them!

Quick Poll

โค๏ธ I'd plant one!
๐Ÿ‘ I already grow Black-eyed Susans!
๐Ÿ˜ฎ I didn't know there was a smaller variety!

Have you ever seen a houseplant that almost looks like it's glowing? ๐Ÿ’œ

Purple Passion Plant...

๐Ÿ‘ Love it

โค๏ธ Want one

๐Ÿ˜ฎ Never seen one before

Not only is it beautiful, but it's also a fast-growing plant that's fun for beginners and experienced plant lovers!

Plant care tips:

๐ŸŒž Light

Purple Passion Plants love bright, indirect sunlight. A sunny east or west-facing window is often ideal. Too little light can cause the purple color to fade, while intense afternoon sun may scorch the leaves.

๐Ÿ’ง Watering

- Keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy.
- Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
- Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
- Try not to get water on the fuzzy leaves

๐Ÿชด Potting

A quality indoor potting mix with good drainage works best.

Choose a pot with drainage holes to help prevent root rot. Since Purple Passion Plants grow quickly, you may need to move up one pot size every year or two.

๐ŸŒฑ Propagation

One of the easiest houseplants to propagate!

Simply take a healthy stem cutting about 4โ€“6 inches long, remove the lower leaves, and place it in water or moist potting mix. In a few weeks, you will see new roots begin to develop.

๐ŸŒฟ General Care

- Fertilize monthly during spring and summer
- Pinch back growing tips occasionally to encourage a fuller, bushier plant.
- If your plant produces orange flowers, don't be surprised if they have a rather unusual scent. Many growers remove the flowers so the plant can focus its energy on producing more colorful foliage.

๐Ÿ’œ Fun Fact: The vibrant purple color isn't actually from the leaves themselvesโ€”it's created by thousands of tiny purple hairs that cover the leaf surface and catch the light.
