We weren’t always asked how we felt. We were told how to behave.

So now, raising a tween daughter, I’m learning to hold two things at once: the boundary and the relationship.

She needs room to make small choices, change her mind, care about clothes and skincare and friendships, and become more of herself.

And she still needs to know that home is a safe place to bring the big feelings, the mistakes, and the questions.

These are 8 things helping me parent this “going on 19” season with a little more curiosity and a little less control.

Save this for the next hard day—and send it to a mom raising a girl who is growing right in front of her.

I wrote more about this on Anxious African Mom. Link in bio.

10 slides. 10 versions of me. Same woman. 😂

1. The bixie cut.
2. The dress.
3. The panelist, event chair, and Sierra Leone representative.
4. Another photo of the bixie because let’s be honest… the bangs were the main character.
5. Lunch with my forever boo.
6. ChatGPT art because apparently I collect hobbies now.
7. Our first public Perfume & PJs.
8. Taking my girls to tennis for the first time and having one of those full-circle parenting moments.
9. More AI-generated art because one slide clearly wasn’t enough.
10. Me reaching peak motherhood by using Claude to build 8-week summer lesson plans and printing packets for my kids channeling my inner Mariama Bayon. 😭🙌🏾

A few years ago, I thought balance meant doing less.

Now I think balance looks more like making room for all the versions of yourself.

The woman building a career.
The woman building community.
The woman building a marriage.
The woman building memories with her children.
The woman who still makes time to play, create, learn, and try something new.

No perfect theme. No carefully curated aesthetic.

Just a life that feels full.

And honestly, that’s my favorite kind of success. ❤️

“Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about.”

Nobody ever sat me down and said my feelings didn’t matter.

But somehow, I got the message.

Growing up, many of us learned to stop expressing what hurt.

We learned to move on before we learned to process.

To keep the peace.
To be respectful.
To not make things worse.

And while there are things from my childhood I’m proud to carry forward, this isn’t one of them.

So here’s what I’m trying to do differently:

🛑 STOP teaching children that their feelings are a problem to solve.

▶️ START creating space for them to express what’s happening inside before we rush to correct what’s happening outside.

✅ CONTINUE teaching respect, accountability, and responsibility—without asking children to silence themselves in the process.

Because my goal isn’t to raise children who never get corrected.

My goal is to raise children who know their feelings are welcome here.

Children who understand that authority and accountability can live in the same room.

Children who know that even Mom can say:

“I was frustrated.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Thank you for telling me.”

Maybe that’s what cycle-breaking looks like.

Not rejecting everything we were taught.

Just deciding what deserves to come with us.

💬 Let’s talk:

What is one thing you’re choosing to STOP, START, or CONTINUE from your own childhood?

Every day after school:

Me: “Shoes off and wash your hands.”

Kids: 🏃🏾‍♀️💨🏃🏾‍♂️💨🌀

Me: “Shoes off and wash your hands.”

Kids: acting like they’ve never heard those words before in their lives

Me: “Shoes off and wash your hands.”

Kids: “Mommy, watch this!” “Mommy, look at this!” “Mommy, guess what happened today?”

Me:

“I SAID SHOES OFF AND WASH HANDS NOW!”

😩😂

Thank God it’s summer now because the after-school chaos has officially ended…

…and been replaced by a whole new set of problems.

Now it’s:

“How are you hungry again?”

And my personal favorite:

“Why is everyone suddenly in the same room as me?” 😭

But whether it’s after-school season or summer break season, one thing stays the same:

I still lose my patience sometimes.

And when I do, I repair.

I apologize.

I explain what happened.

Because I want my kids to know that being a grown-up doesn’t mean never making mistakes.

It means taking responsibility when you do.

My mistakes don’t define me as a parent.

My willingness to repair does.

Anybody else’s kids replace one kind of chaos with another the minute summer starts?

“They said I’m a vibe… but if I’m being real, so are a lot of moms.

You’ve just been surviving for so long that you forgot you’re allowed to soften too.

A lot of us look “put together” because we’ve mastered over-functioning.
We carry the schedules.
The mental load.
The expectations.
The pressure to always get it right.

And somewhere in the middle of trying to be everything for everyone else… you stopped giving yourself grace.

This is your reminder that you do not have to earn rest.
You do not have to punish yourself into becoming a good mother.
You do not have to carry perfection to be worthy.

You are allowed to laugh loudly.
Dress up.
Take up space.
Romanticize your life a little.
Celebrate yourself while you’re still becoming.

The version of you that feels light, feminine, creative, joyful, and free?
She still deserves to exist outside of survival mode. ✨
