As we wind down the year, we’re finishing up a few deck maintenance projects and helping homeowners get their outdoor spaces ready for many more seasons of use.

On this project, the client received a brand-new deck floor, along with a completely rebuilt staircase. We also updated the handrails with a design that makes it much easier to keep the deck surface clean and debris-free. Inside the screen porch, we replaced the old, worn-out screening and installed new trim to give the space a clean, refreshed look.

This spring, we’ll be back to apply stain and put the final protective finish on everything.

Maintenance projects like this are a great way to extend the life of your deck and avoid a full replacement. If your deck or screen porch needs attention before next season, now is a great time to plan ahead.

Lately we’ve been getting a lot of questions from homeowners who have decks with a good, solid frame and decent handrails… but the deck floor itself is weathered, cupped, or holding water because the original boards were spaced too tight.

It’s a pretty common situation, especially with older pressure-treated decks. The structure underneath was built well, but the decking boards have taken years of sun, rain, and expansion—and now they’re swollen, twisted, or soft in spots. When boards don’t have enough spacing to breathe and drain, water sits on the surface, debris gets trapped, and the deck starts to age way faster than it should.

The good news?
You don’t always need a full tear-down.

A lot of the time we can give a deck a whole new life by:
🔹 Removing the old floor boards
🔹 Checking the joists for any rot or moisture issues
🔹 Adjusting or correcting spacing where needed
🔹 Installing new decking—composite or wood—on the existing frame
