Tech Tuesday: Why keeping your HVAC coil clean actually matters

Your HVAC coil is basically the lungs of your system. When it gets gunked up with dust, pollen, and grime, a few things happen fast:

Higher bills: A dirty coil can't transfer heat well. Your system runs 30% to 40% longer to hit the same temperature, and that shows up on your power bill.
Weaker airflow: Buildup restricts air moving through the system. Rooms get stuffy, hot/cold spots appear, and you’ll notice the vents barely blowing.
More breakdowns: That extra runtime overheats components. Compressors and fan motors wear out early, and repairs aren’t cheap.
Worse air quality: Damp, dirty coils grow mold and bacteria. Then your system blows that through the whole house. Not great if you have allergies.
Shorter system life: An HVAC that constantly strains to overcome a dirty coil might die 3 to 5 years sooner than it should.
Bottom line for homeowners: Cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils once a year, usually in spring before heavy AC use, pays for itself. You get lower energy costs, better comfort, and fewer emergency repair calls when it’s 95° outside in the South.

Tech Tuesday: The #1 Plumbing Tip That Can Save You $1000s

Know where your main water shut-off valve is — and how to use it.

Why this tip beats all others:
When a pipe bursts, a toilet overflows, or a water heater fails, every second counts. Water can dump 5-10 gallons per minute into your home. Shutting off the main valve immediately stops the flood and turns a potential disaster into a minor repair.

Do this today:
1. Find it: Most homes have it in 3 places:
Basement/Crawl space: Near the front foundation wall
Garage: On the wall closest to the street
Outside: In a covered box near the street with your water meter

2. Test it: Turn it clockwise to close. Open a faucet to confirm water stops. Then open the valve fully again. If it’s stuck or leaky, call a plumber now — not during an emergency.

3. Tag it: Tie a bright ribbon or label on it so everyone in your house can find it fast.
