After much consideration and a recent change in ownership, I wanted to share an update with our community. The co-owners of Empire Tree Service Inc. have parted ways, and I now have sole ownership of the company with that change. I have made the decision to close Empire Tree Service Inc. and move in a new direction. I am incredibly grateful to all of our loyal customers who supported us over the past few years. Your trust, business, and referrals meant the world to us, and it was truly an honor to work on your properties and be part of this community. When land is cleared and a new home is built, the surrounding trees will respond by growing into the newly available sunlight, a process known as phototropism. As the tree phototropically grows, it develops excess lean and end weight over the home.
The root structure of the these trees is also severely compromised during construction, making them less able to support this newly added excess lean and end weight, and the tree is then much more prone to failure.
Phototropic trees pose many additional challenges to aerial arborists than trees of normal growth habit. One of the specialty services of Empire Tree Service is safely removing hazardous phototropic trees.

The American sycamore. A magnificent tree, that often reaches gargantuan size and a delight in the landscape.
Although beautiful, this species has many adaptations to protect itself that can be hazardous to animals and people alike.
The pollen can cause allergies in spring. The leaves are covered with fuzzy hair like trichomes on the underside which can cause severe respiratory irritation. The leaves and seeds also contain a poison, hypoglycin, which causes atypical myopothy. A fatal muscle disease which affects humans, dogs, and especially horses when ingested.
In the proper location the sycamore tree is a fabulous specimen. But individuals such as the one pictured on pleasant lake warrant removal due to these factors as well as being a threat to structures and septic systems.
Inaccessible to large equipment, this lakefront tree was a breeze for the master climbing team at Empire Tree Service.

Attention to the minute details is necessary in arboriculture, even in the largest of trees. Remember winter is oak pruning season, and Empire works year round no matter the cold or the snowy conditions.
This beautiful old white oak on cavanaugh lake west of Chelsea will benefit from a thorough pruning and continue to shade, shelter, and feed life for centuries more.

Another funeral for a scots pine tree here in Southern michigan.
The scots pine, a beautiful blue green tree with bright orange upper bark, hails from the ancient Caledonian forest of northern Scotland, where it arrived after the last ice age circa 7000 BCE.
Here in michigan it is highly susceptible to our native microscopic worm the pinewood nematode. The nematode is spread by various bark beetles and wood boring insects, and causes the fatal disease known as pine wilt.
Empire is very often called to remove deceased scots pine trees due to pine wilt, such as the one pictured here.
We advise the planting of Michigan's native pines, specifically our state tree the white pine.
These can more readily handle nematode infections.

As the temperature drops and we prepare for more ice and snow, for tree preservation pruning, to the branch tips is where to go.
Proper tip reduction pruning, a specialty of Empire Tree Service, is the best way to prevent branch failures in the event of ice and snow loads.
Removing lower branches and limbs from the inner canopy does little to reduce the forces a tree undergoes during winter weather events.
Tip reduction is one of the most challenging types of pruning for an aerial arborist, so many companies will solely remove lower and inner canopy branches and limbs, doing little to effectively preserve the tree.

Are you planning a new build or addition?

Often times the root zone of trees undergoes heavy damage during a construction project. Trees depend on the upper two inches of soil for the majority of their nutrient uptake. When backfill is introduced to the soil surface, the PH is usually drastically changed, and the tree is susceptible to decline and slow death.

It is always less costly to protect the root zone before the construction process, a service offered by Empire, than to remove a dying tree. It is also less costly to remove the tree, if deemed necessary, before construction commences.
