A fire pit doesn't have to look like every other fire pit. The material inside the feature gives us another opportunity to customize the backyard and tie the design together. This one uses blue fire glass, but there are plenty of other directions we can take.

Fire glass comes in different colors, while lava rock creates a more natural look. We can also use decorative fireballs in black, gray, or white for something a little more unique. These details can complement the pool tile, stone, landscaping, and overall color palette.

When we add a spa to a custom pool, one of the first decisions is whether it should sit flush with the pool or be raised above it. Both can work well, but they create a very different look and affect the budget differently.

A spa typically adds around $15,000 to $18,000 to a pool project, depending on size, equipment, finishes, and layout. A raised spa usually costs a little more because of the additional tile or stone on the exterior, but it also gives us the option to create a spillway into the pool. That extra elevation can turn the spa into a focal point instead of having it blend into the pool deck.

After decades in the pool industry, I kept seeing the same problem over and over. Homeowners were making one of the biggest investments in their backyard without really understanding where the money was going, what each phase should cost, or what options they actually had.

The difference here is basically what happens once the sun goes down. During the day, you notice the layout, clean pool lines, raised spa, cantilever pergola, turf details, and the way the whole backyard is put together. At night, the fire features and pool lighting take over and the space feels completely different.

That’s why we think about lighting and fire features while we’re designing the pool, not as extras at the end. In an Arizona backyard, you’re probably using the space just as much after sunset as you are during the day, so it should look good both ways.

One of the nicer parts of modern pool automation is not having to walk outside and flip switches every time you want to use a feature. We can set up water features, lighting, and compatible fire features so they can be controlled right from your phone.

You can also build schedules around how you actually use the backyard. If you like hearing the water first thing in the morning, we can have it come on automatically, shut off during the hotter part of the day, then come back on again at night. It sounds like a small detail, but it makes the backyard feel a lot more usable without constantly thinking about it.

A lot of people see a larger custom pool like this and assume it's going to take dramatically longer to build. The reality is that while a project like this includes more plumbing, rebar, and structural work, the early construction stages move at a very similar pace to a standard pool.

This 170 perimeter pool features a custom spa, floating pads, and floating travertine lounge areas that will become standout features once everything is complete. At this stage, excavation, plumbing, steel, and electrical are already in place, and it has only been about two weeks since construction began.

An outdoor kitchen works best when it feels like an actual extension of the house. Here we combined a built-in grill, pizza oven, bar seating, TV, lighting, and a covered structure so the space can handle cooking, eating, and hanging out without everyone constantly going back inside.

We also like keeping the cooking zone close to the seating instead of pushing it off into a corner. It makes the whole backyard feel more connected, especially when you’re already designing around a custom pool, fire pit, or outdoor living area. In Arizona, shade matters just as much as the appliances, so the structure is part of the kitchen, not an afterthought.

This homeowner called seven or eight pool companies before reaching us. The cheapest option he found wanted around $60,000 down, with a final price near $129,000, and he still felt like he would be compromising on materials and features.

When he connected with us, we worked through what he actually wanted instead of trying to force the backyard into a preset package. We put together designs, adjusted the layout, changed a few details, and kept working until the plan made sense for both the backyard and the budget.
