Wonderful cottage on Cashiers Lake Rd — I’m not sure many municipalities would even allow the build of a fireplace/chimney like that anymore. This house is fantastic. I walk by it and several other wonderful little cottages daily when I’m here in Cashiers. Some of the team arrived last night, others pulling into town on Thursday or Friday. We’re here in the mountains doing some work for a good friend. We’re celebrating the long lived life of his late father on Saturday, and celebrating the 2nd birthday of my daughter Jara on Sunday. Of life, of death, of toiling and of stillness, and of love and of virtue, may we be at peace with the nature of it all, or what’s more, have the capacity to celebrate it all the same.

[1/2] Paced one out today. A little sloppy, but did it in just a few hours. I was able to deliver a day-after-meeting drawing. It’s usually weeks/months. I decided to sit at our land all day and take the day off.
It was a heated early morning.
What the hell does somebody do if they ‘take the day off’?
I walked barefoot in the woods for about an hour.
Then I forgot how long it takes the sun to come up in the forest and I put my Vivo’s back on without socks because they’re Vivo’s and that’s why I bought them.
A few times I cleared the leaves and branches and made a nice sunny spot to catch some stillness for a moment or nine. Nothing feels better on your feet than the soft, forgiving soil carpet you find under the brush and leaves on the floor of a deciduous forest. I carved a cedar walking stick. It’s sort of like if a walking stick and a caveman club had a baby type of walking stick. Girth.
But first, I had to chop the tree down.
It was located on the future build site, so it’s days were limited, thus I could feel good about hacking it. I also machete’d (a word?) several paths through the newly overgrown post-disaster areas of the forest where large trees once stood, now fallen from the great storm at Jakob’s Creek (the estate, as I’ve started calling it, has been named “Windfall”). You can’t make s**t like this up. In the wreckage of 95+ chestnut oaks and their countless comrades, Sweet G and Pop Lar purchased all the sunny real estate from the tornado at dimes on the dollar. Of these new shoots, I hacked several for our paths because this isn’t a tree farm. And even if it was a tree farm, we’d need paths to walk it. We never liked people who tried to be taller by cutting one another down around them, but everybody does love large trees, and so we do precisely just that FOR our favorite trees — right ?? Gotta cut down the small, weak, young sissy trees so that the already established, more mature trees can REALLY get huge. I think Malcolm Gladwell would argue that humans do that too.
