Is your heating bill higher this winter? 🥶🔥

Before you assume your HVAC system is the problem, here’s something to consider:

Natural gas rates have increased over the past year. That means even if you use the SAME amount of heat, your bill can still go up.

The rate example shown ($1.35 → $1.75+ per therm) is based on publicly reported residential averages from North Carolina utility filings and local news coverage. Actual rates vary by provider and billing cycle.

Sometimes it’s the utility rate.
Sometimes it’s your system quietly losing efficiency.

We are happy to help if you are experiencing:
• A system running constantly
• Uneven temperatures
• Performance concerns
• Suspected inefficiency
• Maintenance needs

Efficiency starts with airflow. Proper duct sizing and installation helps your furnace or AC work smarter, not harder, while reducing the chance of breakdowns or damage.

For this project, we designed and built custom ductwork, fully insulated it, and optimized the airflow throughout the home to ensure the system runs smoother, stays protected and delivers consistent comfort for years to come!

5 ways to prepare your HVAC for summer!

Functioning AC systems are a necessity during the hot Carolina summer. Not only is it uncomfortable to lose AC during the hottest season of the year, but it can also be very dangerous for young children or the elderly population.

We are already experiencing 80 degree heat and we all know it's just the beginning!

It’s time to look at your AC system(s) to ensure they are ready for the sizzle of summer.

Did you know a neglected air conditioner loses roughly 5% of its efficiency each year that it operates without upkeep?! 😳

Not only can an annual maintenance prevent that, it also extends the lifespan of the unit by between 30%-50%! 🙌

Did you know that regulations have changed this year for air conditioners?

While these new 2023 HVAC regulations may not have an immediate impact on your home, it’s good to know what to expect.

The following requirements have taken effect:

1. SEER Regulations:

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This measures an air conditioner’s cooling output to the electrical energy it consumes. The higher the rating, the higher the efficiency of the unit.

There are two SEER-related changes:

A) The minimum SEER rating will increase on HVAC equipment. Currently, new air conditioners must have a minimum SEER of 13 in northern states and 14 in southern states. In 2023, this will change to 14 in northern states and 15 in southern states.

B) The industry will adopt the “SEER 2” standard. SEER 2 is similar to its predecessor in that it measures the total heat removed from a specific space versus how much energy it uses in the process. The required testing conditions will change to better mirror real-life circumstances.

HVAC equipment, including AC condensers and heat pumps, will have to display their SEER 2 rating on the packaging which will help give you a slightly better estimate on your potential energy usage when shopping for new equipment.

2. AC Refrigerant Regulations:

Recently, the industry moved away from R-22 Freon to R-410 Puron refrigerant. It’s less damaging to the environment, human health and doesn’t harm the ozone layer.

Next year, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) is likely to require another move to a class of refrigerants called A2L. A2L has a lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) than alternatives, but it is mildly flammable.

HVAC manufacturers are already beginning to design new technology to accommodate A2L. This includes new technology to store and transport systems with A2L and equipment.

Don’t worry, if your current HVAC equipment is in good condition and fulfilling your heating and cooling needs, there’s no need to buy a new one that meets these new industry standards, but as your system ages, it may be harder to find compatible parts.

New furnace installed in 3… 2… 1… ok you can swipe right to see it! 😉

The average traditional furnace is designed to operate for 15 to 30 years in a home.

The easiest way to increase the lifespan of your furnace is to manually change the filter(s) approximately once per month and hire a certified technician to perform maintenance and repairs once a year.

Lets talk FILTERS! And we aren't talking the ones you use on IG or photoshop! 😉😆

As you may know, air/furnace filters come in many sizes, thicknesses, styles, MERV's, HEPA, pollen, charcoal, washable, electronic... and the list goes on! We understand that it can all be so overwhelming - what does it all mean?! How do you choose one that's right for your system?

In some cases, when you have a thicker filter (or higher MERV rating), there is a higher opportunity for more dust to be trapped in the (media) filter. This can be good and bad because as the filter increases size and MERV, the more restrictive it can be on the HVAC system. This puts unnecessary stress on the fan motor and can cause the motor to work overtime and use more energy. In the long run, this can cause costly breakdowns.

It's always best practice to consult an HVAC contractor to ask what your system is able to handle for filter styles and your needs as they analyze your whole duct system as well as equipment.

Once you've selected an appropriate filter, it is our recommendation to change it approximately once per month, depending on your lifestyle. This will help keep things in your home fresh and your equipment running efficiently - plus this practice will allow you to purchase less expensive filters as you are changing them more often!

One of the most common questions we get from home or building owners is: "What kind of thermostat do you recommend?"

With technology and green energy changing at a rapid pace, a basic dial or mercury style thermostat is now becoming obsolete. All the newer Wi-Fi thermostats do have unique apps that offer some different features, but they all have the same primary functions: remotely lower and raise temperature, run program schedules and provide alerts if your dwelling is above or below extreme temperature setpoints.

Something to note is that there are only a few which offer humidity and IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) control, which is what we would recommend if you want total control of your climate and energy savings.

In the end, the real energy savings will come from running a scheduled program to ensure your HVAC system not fully performing at unnecessary times.

We hope this helps!
