Preparing your deck for fall: It’s Fall y’all and here comes the time of the year when your deck gets covered in leaves.
Here’s a few things you can do to help maintain your deck and keep it lasting unlike the one pictured.

Sweep or blow off foliage that is on the surface at least weekly. It’s easier to stay caught up than having to catch up.
Get between the cracks! This is more vital than what’s on the surface. Foliage builds up there and hold moisture which in turn rots the wood much faster.
I like to use a 5in1 painters tool to get in the tough spots.
Lastly get your deck cleaned. This is the time of the year we see a lot of mold and mildew start to form.
So use a mild detergent, water and a soft bristled brush to clean and freshen up your investment.

I get questions about joist tape on wood framing all the time. From customers to contractors (even some long time deck builders) and I stand by what I say that it’s a must when building with wood.
The close up picture is from a deck we’re currently adding a screen porch to. If you look in the crack closely, you can see how deteriorated the joist is. It’s cracked and will hold moisture every time it gets wet. This leads to premature wear and a shortened life span of your deck.
Joist tape is specifically designed to cover the tops of the joist where the most wear occurs.
