In 2010 I went to a cabinet shop in Monroe, NC and was hired on the spot as an office secretary. Within two week of starting at TS Woodworks I caught up six months of their back logs and had basically worked myself out of a job. Desperate for a job as a single mom who was also a full time college student I asked them if there was anything else I could do, this resulted in me being sent into the shop where the company built custom cabinetry. At the time I did not know how to read a tape measure, had never worked with wood, and had never painted anything beyond what was done in grade school art class.
There were many great mentors in that shop who taught me everything I needed to know and turned me into a meticulous quality control freak who inevitably worked a few men out of their jobs. At the end of 2012, I found another company whom refinished kitchens who was interested in hiring me part time to glaze their kitchens. In 2013 the custom cabinetry company closed their doors, and I went to work full time at the refinishing company. I made good friends and connections in the business but a few bad jobs, caused some very big problems.
I was working for a company who heavily relied on my skills and devotion but did not respect or compensate me accordingly. I continued to work and struggle while being part of the “A Team” for someone else. Only to fall short when it came time for my bills to be paid, and for my presence at home with my family to be lacking when it was expected. In January 2015, I hit an all time low; I had not been paid in several weeks, after working on Christmas eve and having my paycheck bounce. Despite these hardships I stayed loyal to my employer. The first week of February 2015, I woke up to go to work in hopes to close out a job so we could all get paid... and my 2013 Volkswagen Jetta had been repossessed!!
I called for someone to give me a ride, I went to my employer. I asked for my 1099 tax form and back pay by the end of the day. They produced the requested items, I finished out the day and then never went back! I filed my taxes, got my car back, and then spent my last dime to run an Ad in a Magazine to promote Phoenix Refinishing, and by the grace of God I have continued to be their competition since start up. It has not been without trials but it has been rewarding to say the least.
