I’m painting this 1984 GPZ1100 for a customer whom I’ve painted at least a couple bikes for before. The gas tanks for these are hard to find. This one came from Germany. This tank was a mess, inside and out. In addition to so many paint layers it was probably 1/16” thick, the inside of the tank was rusty and varnished, with a thick flake/scale layer down in the bottom, across both sides. There are lots of different ways to clean tanks, and I’ve tried about all of them. Knowing full well that this one was going to need to be sealed when it was done, I wanted to make sure it was clean inside. The convoluted shape of this tank doesn’t lend itself well to being able to inspect the work inside the tank, so a more dramatic approach was required.
