Successful mulch, bed creation, and planting job in Highland Park this week. We planted rhododendron, hostas, hydrangeas, birds nest spruce, Japanese maple, and some rosemary. Luckily we had a big rain right before we planted. It’s been a drought this year in Chattanooga. Rain, please don’t go away 🫣

W**d barrier fabric sounds good at first, but it usually causes more problems long term in planting beds. It only stops w**ds temporarily because mulch, dirt, and leaves build up on top of it, allowing w**ds to grow anyway.. and those w**ds become harder to pull once rooted through the fabric.

It also limits healthy soil biology, can reduce water pe*******on over time as it clogs, and may restrict shallow root growth for plants. Eventually the fabric becomes tangled with roots and w**ds, making maintenance and removal difficult.

In most beds, a proper 2–4” mulch layer works better by naturally suppressing w**ds while still feeding the soil. Fabric tends to work best under gravel, rock, or erosion-control areas rather than landscape planting beds. Most often we will use cardboard instead of w**d fabric to block photosynthesis/sunlight from feeding the w**ds. By the time the w**ds are starved of sunlight and die, the cardboard will degrade helping the mulch and allowing the soil to do its thing.

It’s not often I have a beautiful coworker by my side on a magical yard, but here we were on this day. Date night came around and there was no way I was going to finish in time. Cyd got off work, and then worked her butt off with me. She freshened up nandinas , spread pine straw, raked her little heart out, dipped her toes into some hedge trimming, and tried to not get frustrated with her boyfriend being her boss for some hours. We celebrated with a good meal at Scottie’s on the river, ate oysters, and drank a couple montucky cold snacks. Good day. Great lady. Satisfying job.

I usually don't let customers jump in and work with me. It tends to make things harder.

But Gary? Whole different story.

Grew up on farms. Ran every machine you can name. Went on to build one of the biggest construction companies in Chattanooga that helped put together the riverfront, riverwalk, aquarium area... the same places we all enjoy today.

Not to mention he also served in the Vietnam war doing photo intelligence from aircrafts.

We worked, talked, and swapped stories all day-about life, love, mistakes, wins... the kind of conversation that sticks with you.

Before he left, he handed me some of his old tools.

Some jobs just hit different. At Ridge and Root, customers are friends to us.

A mulch refresh for another kayaker willing to support my small business!! These beds were full of about 10-12 bushes that were well on their way out.. Customer wanted a reset, and that’s just what they got. Happy to have given them a fresh plate to work with, and I am always stoked to put down pine bark mulch from my friends at the Barn Nursery in downtown Chattanooga. 🌳 🍃 excited to see what they’d like to plant here down the road.
