Mudroom Madness – Or Lack Thereof

Between muddy boots, soaked jackets, and kids somehow tracking in an entire swamp, March in Michigan is a disaster for anyone without a proper mudroom.

🔹 Got one? Congrats, you win at life. 🏆
🔹 Don’t have one? Here’s how to fake it:
✔️ Boot trays – Because stepping in a mystery puddle first thing in the morning is not it.
✔️ Hooks for wet coats – Or just accept that every chair in the house is now a drying rack.
✔️ A bench with storage – For shoving hats, gloves, and the seven different pairs of shoes no one puts away.
✔️ An extra doormat – Because the first one will not survive March.

“Why Is My House Making Weird Noises?!”

Ever noticed your house creaks, pops, and groans more in March? No, it’s not haunted—probably. 😳

It’s just your home dealing with Michigan’s mood swings:
🔸 Loud booms at night? – That’s frost quakes (yes, that’s a real thing). Frozen water in the ground expands and makes mini explosions. Michigan is wild.
🔸 Creaky floors? – The wood is expanding and contracting like it can’t decide what season it is. Same.
🔸 Weird drafts? – That’s Mother Nature’s way of reminding you it’s time to reseal your windows.
🔸 Mysterious knocking sounds? – Probably air bubbles in your pipes, not ghosts. Probably.

March in Michigan is basically your house’s annual "I need a vacation" meltdown.

What’s the strangest noise your house has ever made? Drop it below! 👇

Spring is Here! (Somewhere… Not in Michigan, Though)

While we wait for actual spring to show up, here’s a 'Here-Comes-Spring' home checklist:
✅ Check your sump pump – all this melting snow = potential basement swimming pools. 🏊‍♂️
✅ Inspect your roof – winter took some punches at it, and those shingles might be waving the white flag.
✅ Prep for mud season – unless you like muddy paw prints on your brand-new carpet. 🐾
✅ Stock up on ice melt – because winter will throw one last tantrum before leaving.

🏢 The Smallest Skyscraper: A Tall Tale of Deception

Ever heard of the Newby-McMahon Building in Wichita Falls, Texas?

Dubbed the "world's smallest skyscraper," it stands at a mere 40 feet tall.

The story goes, that back in 1919, a sly developer named J.D. McMahon raised $200,000 to build a high-rise, but he duped his investors with some tricky blueprints that mislabeled inches for feet.

So, instead of being 480 feet tall, McMahon's "skyscraper" only reached 480 INCHES! 📏😂

These days, the tiny skyscraper remains a quirky testament and helpful reminder to always read the fine print. 🔍

Would you invest in a 'skyscraper' without double-checking the dimensions?

🍽️ Kitchen islands: the heart of modern homes… but did you know they weren’t always a thing?

🔙 In the 1700s-1800s, kitchens were separate, hidden spaces—meant to keep heat, smoke, and messes out of sight. No one wanted to see where the food was made.

🏡 Early 1900s: Homes got more open, and the kitchen became a shared family space.

🚀 1950s: The rise of open floor plans brought in breakfast bars and small kitchen islands—but they were mainly for extra storage.

🔥 Today? The kitchen island is THE centerpiece of the home—a spot for cooking, entertaining, and casual dining. The bigger, the better!

Would you ever live without a kitchen island, or is it an absolute must-have in your home? Let’s hear it! 👇

📌 Modern Home Design Trends That Sound Good… But Aren’t 😏

❌ Open Shelving Everywhere 📚

We get it. It’s Pinterest-worthy. But unless you love dusting and perfect dish placement, this trend can quickly become your worst enemy.

❌ Glass Bathroom Doors

Because nothing says "relaxing shower" like being completely visible to the rest of your family. 🚿😂

❌ Sunken Living Rooms

They’re making a comeback… but so are ankle injuries. Good luck navigating that in the dark.

❌ Over-the-Top Smart Homes

A fridge that tells you when to buy milk? Cool.
A whole house that won’t let you turn on the lights without an app? Not so much. 😏

🏡 What’s one home feature that everyone loves but you secretly can’t stand?

🧱 Fun Fact!

We think of concrete as a modern building material, but it actually dates back to Ancient Egypt and Rome.

The Pantheon in Rome (built in 126 AD) still has the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, proving their mix was built to last!

⏳ Meanwhile, today’s concrete typically lasts 50-100 years before cracking....unless we use it for roadways here in Michigan...that stuff doesn't last long at all! 🙄

Maybe it’s time we call up some ancient Romans for advice? 😆

🏡🔨 BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY! (Or at least support me, structurally speaking.)

Ever wondered why we call it a beam? 🤔

This fundamental architectural term traces its roots to the Old English "bēam," originally meaning "living tree."

A beam in construction is a load-bearing element that holds up your home’s structure—whether it’s a rustic timber beam in a farmhouse or a sturdy steel one hidden in your walls.

🏗️ Without beams, let’s just say... gravity wins. 😬

A beam of light, on the other hand, doesn’t carry weight—but it does carry energy and direction, traveling in a straight line just like a construction beam spans a space. 🌞

Both provide support—one for your house, the other for the very existence of life on this planet. 🌱 🌎

At Homeowner Services of Michigan, we specialize in structural remodeling, making sure your home is built (or rebuilt) with the strongest, most reliable beams.

Whether you need a renovation, an addition, or a beam replacement, we’ll shed some light on the best solutions for your home. 💪💡

🔨 Need a contractor who understands the gravity of the situation? We’ve got your back! DM us or visit our website to get started.

Think open floor plans are a sleek, modern trend?

Think again!

Medieval castles had one giant room—the Great Hall—where everything happened: eating, sleeping, partying (hello, medieval raves!).

📌 By the 1600s, rooms started getting divided for privacy (because, hygiene 😬), but in the 1950s, American architect Frank Lloyd Wright brought back open spaces.

Now, 84% of new homes have open-concept designs.

🚪 Bonus fact: The world’s first “modern” open floor plan?

The Palace of Knossos in Crete (built around 1900 BC!). If it’s good enough for a Minoan king, it’s good enough for us.

**Thanks to Martijn Vonk on Unsplash for the great photo!
