"A garden is like a community, if not tended with love and care the roots will not grow strong stems. The stems will not grow strong branches. The branches will not bear strong buds. The buds will not have the strength to become the beautiful flowers that they were meant to be." (Migdalia Galarza)

When my time comes to move on, I will remember this small patch of land (two city-lots) as my humble contribution to a better world and be comforted to know that this, this double-lot garden park in Logan Square will continue to grow strong, inspiring and receiving inspiration from others.

Thank you, Neighbors for your support of our Community Garden Halloween candy give-away. We were so focused on the event that we did not coordinate to document it so there are no photos : (
But volunteers dressed up, came out, and help pass on treats that you all donated...Thank your again, migdalia

Neighbors Garden Park will be forming a management team that will assume responsibility for the following: 1. Administration and management of Neighbors Garden, 2. Garden Maintenance, 3. Volunteer recruitment and community outreach, 4. Environmental education. There are 4 plots therefore 4 co-managers.

Neighbors Garden has 4 3'x10' plots available to be used as personal growing spaces in exchange for "adopting a plot" in the community garden and becoming a co-manager. Co-managers will be required to meet 1/mo to discuss garden needs and goals and plan out a schedule for meeting the goals.

Each co-manager holding a plot will be required to work their community garden plot at least 1/wk for at least 1 hour or once per month for 4 hours.

Community awareness, teamwork, and accountability are important requirements needed for the successful management team and so is a two-year commitment. Year 1 you serve as apprentice under current team mentor, Year 2 you become the mentor for the incoming member/s.

Neighbors’ Garden Park
Gardener/Manager Retiring
(years of service: 1992-2017).

Dear Neighbors,

My name is Migdalia Galarza and this note is to announce my retirement as volunteer gardener/manager of Neighbors’ Garden Park as of November, 2017.

I believe all communities need a garden to serve as sacred space. This is why I dedicated 25 years of my life as Neighbors’ Garden Park volunteer gardener-manager.

I have been involved with Neighbors’ Garden Park since Peter Draper and I drafted the idea on paper back in 1992. The idea grew with support involving the community, Chicago Botanic Gardens, and Chicago Park District…a true grassroots movement that resulted in an award- winning garden still enjoyed by many today.

Thank you for your support throughout the years and please keep supporting green space and community gardens everywhere.

Sincerely,

Migdalia Galarza

Neighbors’ Garden will need a new volunteer gardener/manager. If interested please contact Rebecca at Kosciuszko Park, Chicago Park District:
