Cincinnati winters are hard on concrete.

Every year we go through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles. Water works its way into the surface of a slab, freezes, expands, and pushes the concrete apart. Add road salt in the mix, and you can watch a cheap driveway or patio crumble in five winters.

That's why how a slab gets built matters more than what it looks like when it's done.

A compacted base so the slab doesn't settle. The right thickness for what's sitting on top of it. An air-entrained mix so freezing water has somewhere to go. Control joints cut in the right places. A quality sealer to keep the water and the salt out.
